What's up guys, I'm very interested in going to Miami and am wondering what you guys think my chances are. Here are my stats:

-White male
-3.38 gpa on a 4.0 scale (New Jersey public school). Only 1 honors class and no APs.
-1970 new SAT, 1340 old (680 math, 660 cr, 630 writing).
-3 years varsity lacrosse, 2 years FBLA business club, youth soccer referee, 2 jobs, volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, 4 years rec basketball.

You might get in (decent SAT, low GPA considering you haven't taken any AP classes, you don't mention what your class rank is, and no AP classes will hurt you) but given how competitive Miami is getting in admissions these days, you need to get better. if you do get in, scholarship money may be tough. Make sure you take some AP classes this year, make sure you get all A's. Remember, they get 19,000 applicatios for 2,000 spots in their incoming class, so you need to make yourself standout. I am not slamming your GPA by the way, just looking at it realistically considering you aren't taking AP classes and knowing how competitive the people who are applying to Miami are these days.

I don't think you will get in mainly because of your low gpa. Your SAT is decent but I don't think it's good enough to the point where University of Miami will overlook your gpa. Especially, consdering when your gpa is without any AP classes and only 1 honors.

University of Miami is now a highly selective school with an acceptance rate at or below 40% and they receive 19,000 applications for only 2,000 spots in the freshman class.

SAT scores have increased an average of 15 points each year for the last 5 years and the university has gone from a rank of 66 to 55 (an increase of 11 spots in just 3 years).

Miami has their sights firmly set on the Top 50 and may very well break into the Top 50 either this year (in 5 days when the new 2007 U.S. News rankings are released) or definetely next year. Within the next 3 years Miami could very well be a Top 45 school, if they continue rising at this rate.

Miami is actually MORE selective on average than many schools such as Syracuse, Boston University, University of Maryland College Park and Penn State.

Thanks for the replies. I realize that my GPA is low and my SATs aren't great, so don't feel bad saying so. I'm just trying to get a feel for how hard the school is to get into, and you guys have helped me out. My school doesn't rank, so that's why I didn't post that. Also, I'm not going to apply ED since I'm not going to be able to visit until after applications are due, so I'm just going to apply and see what happens. Again, thanks for the replies.

I think you have a reasonable shot. Our HS did not offer many APs and S only had 2, both taken sr year. Show some interest (contact your admissions rep, attend a local info session) and apply EA to give yourself every advantage. Work hard on your essay. Good luck.

If you log in as a guest and go to college lookup, University of Miami, you will see admission stats for our high school based on SATs and GPA. We use a weighted GPA where an A=5 points for honors and AP class and a B= 4 points if in AP or honors classes. As you can tell, if your weighted scores are a 3.4 or so with 1250 SATs (math and verbal), you should be a shoe in.
