Chances...

Hi my friend is trying to get into A&M and he's pretty worried, so i thought i'd post his stats here and hear your comments. Our senior year is about to start in 3wks.

GPA: 3.6
SAT: 1570/2400 (970 just V&M) this is something he will definitely get up to around 1150-1200 as he will take it again twice
Courseload: 3 AP's Junior year, signed up for 3 AP's senior year (i dont know what his scores were on the exam)

Extracurriculars:
- Table Tennis Club
- Chess Club
- Rec Basketball
- Community service at a Nursing Home

He is white, and he's an in-state applicant.

Please give your advice on his SAT score now, and what he needs to bring it up to, along with any other advice on what extra things he can do as it is his #1 choice.

Also, what is the Early Decision acceptance rate at AMU?

Thanks a lot

If he's in the top quarter, he just needs a 1300/1600 (min. 600 on both M/CR) to get assured admittance. That's where I'd strive to be.

I believe A&M doesn't have ED, I could be wrong though.

If you are an academic admit (top 10% or 1300/1600 SAT and top 25%), you will be admitted within approximately two weeks of when your completed application package is received.

If you are not an academic admit, your application will be evaluated along with other non-academic admits and you may not get a decision until April 1.

If you are not admitted outright, they may offer you the Blinn option, where you attend Blinn JC for two years and transfer to A&M. The Blinn option will allow you to live in Bryan/College Station and participate in A&M activities like an A&M student.

If you indicate that you are interested in joining the Corp of Cadets, it could enhance you chances of being admitted plus you get a $1000 scholarship.

Taking a good test prep course can significantly improve your SAT score. My son did Testmasters (they advertise here on College confidential). It was expensive, but it got his SAT up to a 1370 and he was automatically admitted to A&M. He also ended up getting $1750 in scholarships in addition to an ROTC scholarship. It was well worth our money. My 2nd son is at his Testmasters class right now.
