ECs- 4 years on scholastic bowl team, 2 as varsity captain. joining debate team this year, probably varsity captain. Medical Honor Society and National Honor Society member. Junior Prom committee last year. I'm on the city's Mayor's Youth Council and attended by invitation a meeting with the Governor on the state of high school education.

Work Experience: I have 200 or so hours volunteer work teaching horseback riding to elementary school aged children (including 100 with mentally handicapped kids) and now do so for pay (6-8 hours/week). I'm a camp counselor/barn manager during the summer. I've broken & started training several horses for pay.

Summer Stuff: Last summer I attended the Governor's Foreign Language Academy for German Immersion

Most of my schools are 'reaches.' In the end, I'll be out a couple hundred bucks, but you'll never know if you don't try.

Geez, threads get pushed off the main page rather quickly...

also, I am Presentation Activities Coordinator for Medical Honor Society and Vice-Chair of the SCA Staff Relations Committee.

Still quite eager to get some input...

bump......

Your list is actually really great. I see an excellent range of reaches, matches, safeties.

I think the coolest thing about your app is your ECs, especially your riding experience. As a rider myself I know how good you have to be to break a horse - it's pretty insane you're skilled enough to do that at a highschool age.

Your GPA is a bit funky, but your rank looks great, so I assume it's good, too.

SAT scores are awesome, if a little low for the most selective on your list (750s accross the board would be better...although 800 in verbal looks awesome).

All of the Virginia schools you are in at (I love UVa! Woo!), James Madison being a major safety; I bet you could get good money there.

I think Duke, JHU, G-Town are reaches but very reasonable. Would be surprised if you were rejected from all three!

The Ivies are reaches, yes, but you never know with good essays and recs...& with such a passion and talent in riding, you might get recognized by some varsity equestrian teams (I know some Ivies have this...dunno about the ones you are applying to).

thanks for the input!! JMU is a total safety...mostly for my mother's sake. Realistically, I'll probably end up at UVA, W&L, or W&M...but I can't help but hope for JHU, Georgetown and the like.
Princeton and Yale have club teams...nothing that would warrant recruitment, so that doesn't give me any advantage. ah well, we can all wish, right?

I've added to my list:
U Miami Ohio (for the Harrison Honors Scholars Program)
U Pitt
U Maryland
Vassar
Brown (dream school, can't afford it)

Riding seems to be such an important part of your life now...is it something you want to pursue in college?

There are no women's college's on your list...but many of them have riding programs...that could possibly give you an edge in admissions...although your stats are fairly strong for most of the women's colleges. Mount Holyoke has a nationally award winning equestrian program, has an excellent science center with wonderful research opportunities for undergrads, and great stats for kids getting into medical school. Consortium with the other 5-colleges means there are social and academic opportunities beyond the Mount Holyoke campus. And...it offers both merit and need-based financial aid.

Smith is also a national center for molecular biology research, especially in genomics. 50 students received paid research assistantships in their first two years, mostly to assist in scientific research.

http://www.smith.edu/future/next/stride.php

If you can find even one of the schools on your current list that can say the same, I'd like to know about it.

Duke: Reach
Johns Hopkins: slight reach
U Penn: Reach
Princeton: Reach
Yale: Reach
William and Mary: Match
Washington and Lee: Safe Match
University of VA: Safe Match
Georgetown: Slight Reach

James Madison University: super safety

U Miami Ohio: super safety
U Pitt: super safety
U Maryland: safety
Vassar: Safe Match
Brown (dream school, can't afford it): Reach

I think you have too many safeties. Would you honestly want to go to Pitt? I highly doubt it.
