I am familiar with most of the schools on your list and you have a terrific group of schools listed. As you know, your math SAT is your weak point, but your CR and W scores are very competitive for your safeties. You might want to focus your energy on getting that math score up to at least 550. With your current math score UVM definately is not a safety and the other schools on your safety list - are probably match/safeties.
Bates and Bowdoin are very competitive. This year Bowdoin only accepted 22 % of applicants and I know of kids in the top 10% of their class, SAT over 2000, five years foreign language, AP Calc, and great ECs that didn't get accepted at Bates or Bowdoin. However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't try.

it seems like your sat scores would point out that your school perhaps is not rigorous enuff to some college admission officers...

do u have any AP scores to show them otherwise?

EDIT: I think he/she means UVM as perhaps a "target" school
people usually have 3 categories

actually, SAT scores for my peers are pretty dismal. there are a few higher than me, but i am actually one of the highest in my class so far. (5th or 6th) Some of the kids who have higher ranks than me actually scored about 1200-1400. Is there any way of showing Bates this? Should I not submit my scores?

hey, i'm currently a Bates student and i would recommend that you not send in your scores. they are going to be very low compared to others that apply and use their scores as part of the application process. however, if you retake your SATs or ACTs and the scores increase significantly, then, by all means, put your scores foward. The only score that they care about for the ACTs is the composite--keep this in mind

thanks for the advice. my guidance counselor keeps pressing me to send my scores in though, no matter how low they are. i have retaken the SAT I and plan on taking SAT II and ACT. What is the lowest score you would advise that I submit? How are my stats otherwise? I plan on doing an interview in November. Thanks!

Hi, I'm also a student at Bates... It's often thrown around that if your combined SAT is over 1300 (old form) then you should send it in.

the interview is supposedly a very important part of the process, although I thought my interview at Bates was weak. for the ACT, i would send in the score if it is above a 28, above a 30 looks marvelous though. even if your guidance counselor is pushing you to submit scores, i know that many of my friends at Bates opted not to and they still got in. That's what is so wonderful about the admissions at Bates!

so lets just say i don't submit my scores. In the best case scenario, my interview goes very well (i'm hoping). I have really good recommendations coming also, along with a taped piano recording. With my extracurriculars, GPA, course load, how would you say my chances are?

Also, I have some basic questions about life at Bates. How is the political science department? For the longest time, I've been wanting a small school like Bates because of the level of closeness between student and professor. Does that happen a lot? I want to be able to establish a bond where both I will benefit and the professor will benefit mainly through the fact that we both know each other well.

I recently visited the University of Vermont, and I loved it. However, I feel that there is a possibility that I will 'get lost' at UVM due to its size and that the professors wont fully know my personality and learning style. But Burlington was a great city, which brings me to my next point. When I visited Bates, Lewiston was such a downer. Compared to the vibrant attitude of Burlington, I really think that the lack of oppurtunity and things to do in Lewiston is definitely a negative. Does Bates reach out to Lewiston? Do people explore it? What is a typical Bates student? Is he/she down to earth and intelligent?

Thanks for the advice and helpfulness!

this year should be interesting in terms of admissions...the class of 2010 is at over 500 students as there was over admittance, and therefore the number of kids admitted for the class of 2011 is bound to decrease. good extracurriculars, a heavy course, load, and a strong interview are all that Bates can ask for and so if you have it, I think that you will have just as good a chance as the next student for being admitted.

i am not a poli-sci major, but i know many people who are. I believe we have a very strong political science dept.

the professor student relations here are why I can to bates. It is amazing how much personal attention and how easy it is to contact professors. I just love that about Bates!

Lewiston is not a great area, however, it certainly is not the worst. There are hundreds of ways to reach out to the Lewiston community and so many people do take advantage of those opportunities.

i hope i answered everything, ask more though if you need it!

thanks for all the info ice!

I am a probable polisci major and i have a little bit of information about it. generally, polisci is considered one of the better departments at Bates (although i think econ is rated a little higher).

The politics program is just undergoing some changes as they changed the name from polisci to politics and have restructured the five concentrations that one may specialize in within politics. You can find those on the bates website if you're interested.

While my intro politics course was fairly large (by bates standards so let's say 30 students) my prof still knows my name and is always available by office hours and emails. I've really been enjoying the politics classes so far, if you have any specific questions feel free to post here or PM me.

About Lewiston: true, Lewiston has the highest crime rate in maine, but it's still the highest crime rate in maine. i never feel unsafe around campus or even in lewiston at large. the campus is really involved in the community with various service opportunities popping up all the time. just today i joined a new group to tutor the high school aged somali immigrant population which is growing in this area. really, lewiston might not be the picture of trees and moose you friends had in mind, but it's nice to have something to get involved with.

ok, my new SAT scores went up 200 points.

so does that improve my chances a lot? should i now submit my scores?
