Chances!

I go to NY Public School in Rockland that sends many kids to Ivys. I have a 3.85 and have a fairly rigorous schedule
AP Physics
AP Calc
Java Honors
PIG
Journalism

Sats: 690M, 630W, 630R (The sats suck)
ACT: 30

As far as EC's go I'm pretty terrible
Lacrosse: 9th Grade
Youth Group: 9-12th (dont really go)
Ambulance Corps: 11-12th (Pretty active in it)
Mu Alpha Theta (9-12)
Snowboarding Club (12)

My Essay is how my dad's fight and ultimate loss with cancer changed me.

I want to go for engineering, do I stand a chance?

Yeh I say you have a good chance. I applied and my SATs were lower than yours, though I do have better ECs. If your worried about SATs, you should be fine considering your math score is what counts (and its good).

Yeah, your SATs are about mid-line for RPI, and your ACT is pretty good too... Another factor is that early decision admissions grew by 120% this year, but still, you probably still have a 75% chance I'd say.

delton, can you tell me the source of your comment on early decision admissions growing by 120%, and exactly what does that mean. Were applications up that much, or acceptances, or both?

Yeah, I couldn't really believe that statistic myself. But, I am a freshman at RPI, and recently I got this email:

Dear RPI Undergraduate,

I hope you are having an amazing first semester here at RPI! Rensselaer is
hot these days (New Ivy, PACE gift, CCNI Supercomputer.) and interest in
attending is also VERY high (our Early Decision applications grew over 120%
this year, for example). Admissions needs YOU to help capitalize on this
strong interest.

As you may remember, there is no better way to enjoy and experience a
perspective school than spending it visiting classes, talking to students
on-line, staying overnight and socializing with the students. This year, we
would like to host admitted students on the campus. If you love it here and
would be willing to share your excitement about RPI with a perspective
student by hosting them or if you are willing to be contacted by a
"pre-frosh" about your experience here, please fill out this short form so
we can match you up: http://apply.rpi.edu/engage/enroll/

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me at nondoj@rpi.edu.
Help welcome your new classmates (and woo them away from those inferior
schools out west and in MA and PA)! Thank you all for your help and have a
great year!

Best,

Sorry I haven't been able to find any other sources, but I would not be surprised if that was an accurate figure... interest in RPI has been growing the past few years. Last year they also received more applications then expected and over-enrolled a little. I would guess that they mean applications are up, and not acceptances, as they still have the same housing, and most all freshman are required to live on campus.

Thanks for the clarification. We have heard nothing but good about the school, with the exception of Troy :-( ........

Yeah, well, honestly, besides going home twice, I've only left campus once so far (to go to Friendly's), so Troy hasn't really been a factor for me. As you probably know, theres a ton of stuff to do on campus...

I thought I read that only Rensselaer Medal winners can go ED. Is that true? If so, it would seem that most would be accepted.

Medal winners may apply EA (non-binding)

I bet applications are up since that RPI is a new ivy article. I've forgotten what it was in Newsweek maybe? I think RPI is suddenly on a lot of radars.
