Chances

Hello! I'm applying under Regular Decision, and I would like to know your input on my chances.

North Carolina Resident
Small county (not many people are trying for Wake here)
African American Male
SAT: 1250 (crap)

Besides the trumpet, I also play the euphonium, tuba, trombone, bass guitar, and saxophone.
*Some clubs have a grade requirement

Not many AP classes are available to us. By the time I've graduated HS, I'll have taken AP Calc, AP English, and AP Earth Science. I'll also have College Physics 151 and 152. I've taken plenty of honors courses.

I've gotten many honors in band. I've made All-County and All-District band quite a few times, and I've gotten the Directors Award along with a few other minor ones. The Quiz Bowl team won the county championship in 2004.
I do have a strong musical background, but I enjoy playing sports, building things, and art.

I want to major in Physics. While I don't want to have a career in music, I would like to play in some ensembles.

If anyone can give me an opinion on what my chances are, that would be great. Any feedback would be appreciated!

I'm never sure about anyone's chances, but as a member of the Quiz Bowl team at Wake, I certainly wish you luck.

I'm bad at chances too but I'm guessing that being a NC resident will help you a bit (I think when you're from one of those counties that not many people apply from, it is beneficial). SAT score could be higher, I'd guess...but I'd think you have a decent chance.

Looking at your other ECs, we're always looking for more people for marching band...we just got back from the Orange Bowl and it was a blast. If you want more information about it later, you can PM me.

Top 10% + solid ACTs/SATs + good ecs + URM = very good chance
Good luck!

Yeah, my SAT scores are crap. Since Wake is accepting ACT's now, I'm kind of leaning on that to give me the boost I need to satisfy their test standards. I'm not quite sure how that will pan out, though.

juba2jive, what is Wake's Marching Band like? At my school, It's voluntary, so it's full of young people who don't know when to shut their mouths. It's stupid, because they are the same people who say that they want to do well in competitions. I'm guessing that MB in college would be different. I don't really see myself marching, but I'm not completely opposed to it. I would like to play in pep bands, jazz ensembles, and wind ensembles, I suppose.

By the way, do you know of a trumpet player named Jamie Whitt? He's three years older than me, and he went to a high school in the same county as mine during my freshman year. We played together at All-district, and he dated my best friend's sister for a long time.

What exactly is a URM?

We're pretty laid-back in general, a lot more so than high school...I'd say most of us are probably here for the sports more so than band, lol. We have a new assistant and he's trying to point us in a new, more non-traditional, direction (there's only about 100 of us right now. It's hard for us to be as good as other traditional bands with that kind of size, so we're going to try out some new things).

Wind ensemble and jazz band are both currently directed by the marching/pep band director, so if you're in more than one of those three groups, you'll get to know him pretty well...You do have to march in the fall to be in basketball pep band, though.

I do know of Jamie. Small world, huh? :)

Interesting. We just got a new assistant, too. He's annoying, though. I made a typo in the first post. Marching band was 9-11. I didn't do it this year because there were too many hypocritical idiots. I did march in a parade, though! Our band's behavior is so bad, even the band director is thinking about working at another school. I don't blame him.

Lol, that's why I would march, too. If I get accepted, I guess that's what I'll do. (I can play the fight song by ear :D)

URM = under represented minority?

Yeah. URM status is an added bonus, which makes it look like you have a really good chance at Wake to me, because even disregarding it you would still be a good candidate.
