I have not taken the ACTs yet.

I've got recommendations lined up from some teachers and my guidance counselor so I'm good with that. Also, I'm planning on double majoring in Economics and Poli Sci.

The only grades that are worrying me are a C+ I got in Biology (one sem. class) sophomore year and a B- I got in Speech (stupid required one sem. course) Freshman year.

I'm looking at a 4.0 this semester of junior year.

Chances and recommendations?

Edit: Can someone explain UMich's admissions policies to me? They only count academic classes? A good chunk of my high school career has been art classes. Also, they don't count senior year at all? Meaning, after this semester, that's it? I think I'm in trouble.

And if itl'll help, here are specifics because I really don't understand what classes they count as "academic" and whether or not they count 9th grade:

Pre-High School Science Academy: 3.330 GPA (is not factored into Cum. GPA)

Second semester is easy so far, so it's quite possible I'll get an 4.0 this semester.

Anyone want to enlighten me?

Freshman Year = Thrown Out

Soph Year: First Semester: 3.83, Second Semester: 3.8
Junior Year: First Semester: 4.0, Second Semester (assumption): 4.0

If you get a 4.0 during your junior year (2nd semester as well) you'll have a 3.91 UMich re-calculated GPA which puts you in very good shape.

Your lack of schedule strength will probably hurt you a bit however. But assumign you get a 30+ on your ACT I think you will be a match for UMich

How'd you make those calculations for my GPA for each semester? I can't tell whether to count an art or/gym class as "academic."

But your prediction makes me happy :) haha

Here's how I calculated it, I threw out all of your Art, Gym/Health, Design/Photography, Theatre classes. I took out all of the +/-'s (A's = 4, B's = 3).

it is ironic that you have a high gpa yet a low rank.

yeah, it makes me kind of sad haha. It's partly because of the Science Academy thing where I got a 3.33. I found out it actually is factored into my cum. gpa. Oh and freshman year...these two factors might stop me from getting accepted to U of Chicago and Northwestern (my other choices besides UMich and UW-Madison). sigh.

Just to tell you, a lot of people from my school got into Michigan with around your stats, lower ACT, but they had incredibly weak class schedules compared to even me.

Low ACT by I mean 24-27

Cvjn, he's OOS...

I too have heard of ppl with like 3.8-3.9 UM GPA's that take easier classes with 24-27's getting in (but almost always instate).

Then again, I've heard of an abnormally large amount of deferrals with 3.6-3.7 UM GPA with very hard courseload and 30-33 ACTs (and they are in-state)

Whatever, I'll apply as early as possible next year and increase my chances that way...

I honestly think that UMich's admissions can be some of the most random ever...

Their admissions policies are throwing out my worst scores though, gotta hand it to them for that :)

Umich admissions are probably the LEAST random, in my experience. It seems like everyone who I have talked to that has gone through their entire app with me has gotten in if I predicted it. Some of them I did say that would be deferred did in fact get deferred. However, there were 2 people that I would have easily thrown in the defer pile who got in. Umich is extremely predictable.

You got a very good shot assuming they don't change everything next year. Look in the other chance thread about the Umich applicant's to-do list.

What is the disadvantage of being OOS when applying to UMich?

Michigan is a state school. It has an obligation to it's in state residents. OOS is harder.
