What do you think my chances are??? If I were to play up the MLK committee do you think that could help me with a chancellors scholarship?

While Vanderbilt is very generous with merit based financial aid and a number of posters on this board have received partial scholarships, it is my understanding that the Chancellor's awards go to those with near perfect standardized testing scores and academic records. Your record looks impressive and you might well be surprised how much aid you might be offered if your EFC merits it based on this record. You may want to go back and read previous posts on this forum related to Mosaic weekend which is Vanderbilt's effort to recruit a diverse spectrum of students. Good luck!

But you do think I have a chance to get in ??

I would say that your chances are really good for Vandy. (I think 2VU agrees) You seem very well qualified and pretty much above average by Vandy standards. And Vandy definitely is trying to get a more diverse population (they'll definitely fight to have you). Financial packages are wonderful I basically had my need (in terms of all costs minus ETC) met in grants and colleges dont do that often. You seem to see Vandy as your goal. You could probably go higher and have some "reach"-schools in mind. (just to see, you know? that's what I'd do anyways). but Vandy is awesome!!! So do apply and go there!

he's not above average, but he does have a pretty decent shot. Don't expect a merit-based scholarship.

he might be right about merit based scholarships, b/c those are really competitive. (try anyways), but for financial aid, they look at your need and academic potential, which can be good enough as scholarships.

I think mono172000 has an excellent chance--his EC's show leadership and appear to show a passion for governtment-type activities. I wouldn't count out merit scholarships, particularly as an URM. Of course we are all just guessing here--No one can predict for sure. Good luck!

URM- decent scores. You're probably in. Don't expect the Chancellors though, you need a 1500 for that. But financial aid is generous.

my one question would be whether or not your school is competitive. Your sat scores are strong, and extraciricculars (sorry i cant spell) are excellent. if your high school is legit than I would say you have a legitamite shot at acceptance. if it isn't, then I would say you try to raise your sats.

Its fairly competitive. We have some great students and we usually put at least 2 kids in top tier schools per year. This years senior class will see kids going to rice, princton, and possibly julliard so I suppose we're doing something right.

sounds good. i got the impression that ur retaking the sat. id say ur in now, anyway. however, id also say to retake it bc it could lead to more options. take it from me (as a current senior who unfortunately passed on the last 2 sat testing dates), theres definitely no harm in retaking it.

Yeah I'm deffinatly going to take them again, hopefully they go up a little bit. I really want to be able to go to Vanderbilt or collges like it (Duke, UVA) but w/o the money I dont know how realistic that will be. Maybe some higher scores will put me in a better position for merit aid.
