I really want to go to hopkins......am i just dreaming?
planning to retake act-got 24....perhaps improve to 28?
thanks for any advice, one frazzled person here

Start considering other schools unless you can bring up those sat's...considerably. are you a soph or jr? have you taken sat ii's? are you a first gen or URM? many many factors. please elaborate.

Am a senior, what is a URM? What other factors do you need to know?
I think i'm more comfortable w/act. What score do i need for jhu? if i practiced, could i bring a 24 up to that score? Besides my standardized scores, does my profile look ok for jhu, or do i need to do something more besides win the olympic medal, nobel peace prize(haha)? Thanks for any advice, really! By the way, my grades put me in the top 3%, and my school rarely sends students to top school.

oh sorry i forgot to put my couse load down
9-4 honors
10/11-3ap, 2hon (my school lets you graduate early if you want)
12-6ap

also am member of NHS
founded debate club at school

hope this helps you get a better picture, if still need more info please let me know. I want to max my chances, my parents are like hyper about college acceptance since my siblings all went to the ivies(ugh)

URM-under-represented minority
Scores: 25%-75%
SAT Total: 1990-2280
SAT Verbal: 650-750
SAT Math: 690-790
SAT Writing: 650-740
ACT: 30-34

thanks coolguyusa123, i have no idea how i'm going to improve my scores that much, my verbal is ok...but everything else is awful.....i wish there was some magic button.....sigh if only........

No offense, but with a 480 Math, I think you're an automatic reject. If you get really good SAT II scores and AP exam scores, you're chance is slightly better [especially since your course schedule seems fairly rigorous]. Even then, however, I wouldn't count on getting in.

GPA's fine though. Do you know your rank in your grade?

dancer- have you only taken the SATs once? I think you should try to take them again, perhaps you were having an "off" day. Make sure you either buy or get to the library and take out one of the SAT study guides, I don't think they help too much with actual info that is on the test, but I believe that it can make you a little more confident if you feel you are more "prepared". Good luck.

If you retake the SAT Is and score well, perhaps you have a shot. Even then, you must groom your application to portray you in the absolute best light.

chacha, i'm afarid that if i retake colleges will look down on me....don't they like freak out if you take it more than once? sorry...i'm really new to all this college stuff. Plus how much can i truly expect to improve if i retake...and is it ok to get pro help....i was scared to before because i thought if the admission people found out they would think less of me and my score. But then again i no expert. thanks everyone for all the tips and pointers.......they are really helpful....i want to go to jhu almost more than anything else right now.....

ps-my rank is most likely either 1 or 2....i know i'm in the top....i'v only ever made one stupid b

If you take the SAT I two or three times, colleges won't mind. Usually they will take the best math, best verbal, and best writing scores from all 3 SAT Is that you take. If you scored really well on math the first time you took the SAT, they will take that score as your math. If on the second administering of the test, you did worse on math but really well on verbal, the college will take that verbal score. If on the last adminstering, you did really bad on math and verbal, but really well on writing, the college will take that writing score. They will combine your best scores in all 3 sections to form a score called a "superscore".

thanks fusiondogg......but should i get pro help on the sat, or does not really matter....i don't know how helpful these programs actaully are....

what colleges could i hope to get into....if i retook the sat and got a decent score? match, reach, safety?

Princeton Review classes are excellent. Top-notch.

And it depends what the "decent score" is. What score do you expect to get on the retake?

Ummm...480 math DOES NOT mean she's an automatic reject. As a current student here I can tell you that your SAT's do not matter as much as you think. Your rank and GPA is good but just try to bring up your scores a bit. From what I know, your SAT's will not make or break your app. As for other schools, it's really up to you to decide where you should apply because we don't know what you're looking for in a college.

Do you honestly think, asdf, that you could've gotten into JHU with a 480 math?

The fact is, SATs are used by most colleges to filter out applicants. The SAT score is the first thing many colleges look at, and they always review the applications of high SAT scorers before anyone else. SATs are famed for the fact that they are the great equalizer--while the quality of schools may differ throughout the nation, the SAT a student takes in Alabama is the same that a student in Michigan will take.

I don't think I could've gotten into JHU with a 480, especially though since I'm in math intensive field/double major in math.

fussiondogg, according to coolguy i need a total of at least a 1990 for jhu, so that or higher would be really great....

what is more likely....and improvement of 24 to 30 on act or 1720-1990 on sat?
