Chances

Hi.

I'll be a senior next year and am planning on applying to several engineering and/or med schools beginning in August. Top on my list is CalTech, but I'll also apply to UC Berkeley, MIT, U of C, Georgia Tech, Duke, Harvard, and Stanford.

Grades/Classes:

GPA: 4.0
Ranking: Top 2% out of 750
AP's: World History, Biology, Physics B, Physics C, US History, Chemistry, Literature, Macroeconomics, US Government, Calculus BC

All other classes taken were Gifted level (the highest non AP level offered in my district), with the exception of Honors C++/JAVA/VB (taken online through Keystone High School), Honors Philosophy (taken through Northwestern's Center for Talent Development), and Honors Spanish I-III.

Scores:
SAT I: 780 Crit Reading, 770 Math, 730 Writing
SAT II Math: <apparently my="" score="" was="" one="" of="" the="" small="" percentage="" that="" isn't="" up="" yet="">
SAT II Biology M: <see above="">
ACT: <not paying="" $8.00="" to="" get="" them="" early=""></not></see></apparently>

EC's:
NHS (two years), Beta Club (4 years), FBLA (State Runner up in computer concepts and national convention delegate/competitor in 2005), GHP (Governor's Honor Program, attended in Chemistry summer 2007. Wiki it if you're unfamiliar), 4 year Reflections county winner, 2 year state winner and national competitor, Boy Scouts (attended Florida Seabase SCUBA program summer 2006, did whitewater kayaking at Camp Rainy Mountain in 2005, did US Army Ranger Camp at Camp Rogers through the BSA)

Sports:
3 year participant, 2 year Varsity letterman for Soccer
4 year varisty letterman for Swim, 3 year state qualifier, 2 year state finalist (currently ranked 12th in state in the 100 fly, should move up in that ranking next year)
Classic I club soccer for 4 years
Year round USS swimming

Jobs:
Summer league swim coach for three years (head assistant coach this summer, probably be co-head coach next year)
Started my own lawn mowing/landscaping business, brings in a few grand a year
Freelance computer repair/installation

Outside interests:
Avid guitar player for the past two years, built a home recording studio and make my own music, SCUBA diving, building computers, reading, writing nonfiction and poetry as well as music, jazz improv

Think that'll be good enough for CalTech?

FYI
Those 4 year things for sports are projected, since the season hasn't actually begun yet. I'm guaranteed a swimming letter since I've been on varsity for three years already, and the chances of me not remaking my soccer team are very small. For club soccer, I've already tried out and remade my previous team. For most of the clubs (NHS and Beta, namely) we've already done the reapplication process. I included AP classes I've already signed up for in my list of AP's. I'll have my SAT II's and ACT sometime in the coming week, hopefully.

There's nothing wrong with your resume, but two things:

1) you spell your top choice school incorrectly! Haha...we go by "Cal*t*ech."

2) How interested are you in med school?

I just figured they did it the same way GaTech does. Duly noted.

Well, I'm more interested in Biomed than in straight med school. I'm kind of floating between a couple of different education choices. On the one end, I'm very interested in neuroscience, brain chemistry research, etc. On the other hand, I'm also very interested in Biomed engineering. In between the two, I go also go the MD + neurologist route, though I'd like to do research. The medical side of what I want to do would be better suited to a school like Duke or Johns hopkins, whereas the Biomed side is better suited to GaTech, Caltech, or MIT.

My SAT II scores came today. A little disappointing, but I have another opportunity to take them.

Math II: 750
Biology M: 750
