Chances?

Well, I'm here so there's only one thing I want. Your opinion.

Let's start with the basics. I'm a southeast female asian, applying as an international (class of 2012). I'm also going to apply for financial aid. A lot of it, hopefully. I can only pay about $4k a year. Poor me.

SAT I: 2000. It's not a GREAT score, but it's solid (I think). Still thinking if I should retake or let it be.

SAT II: MathIIC/Physics- bad. was having a really bad day. Definitely gonna retake on October. hoping to get between 660-740.

GPA: Our grading system isn't based on this, but if i had to guess, probably a 3.4-3.5. That's enough to make honors in this system, right?

EC's: I haven't cured cancer, or won in an international olympiad, or anything of that sort. BUT, I have a bunch of pretty good ones. Leadership positions, varsity (2), etc. etc. Won't go into details anymore.

Oh yeah, i want to go into engineering. I'm not sure if that's an advantage or not.

So, here are some of the schools I've been looking at:
USC, Duke, Johns Hopkins, UMichigan, Columbia, UChicago, any one of the UC's, Mount Holyoke...

Chances? Any other suggestions? Match/safety/reach?

Please?

bump bump. i need all the help i can get

You're an international asking for a LOT of FA at top universities. They're all high reaches, given the GPA and SAT scores. If you weren't international, they'd still be reaches though. Get your numbers much higher to be competitive. Are you an URM? That might help.

i'm sorry, but what's URM?

and what are my possible safeties?

underrepresented minority = URM

Possible safeties = you're in the school's top 25% for SAT scores & GPA.

a friend of mine told me that the median for Harvard (and other Ivy's) is 1990 in the SAT. Given my score, he said my range would be above average all the other applicants. Meaning, I have a pretty decent shot. Should I believe him? Or is it far from the truth?

^^ edit. i'm sorry, i meant 1900's

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree, they all seem a bit reachy to me..maybe Holyoke? B/c the schools are big, you money would probably be as much an issue as getting in

care to chance me?

no, it usually takes 2200--> to get into harvard and the other ivys. Unless you have some unbelievable essays, a lot of those schools will be big reaches. The financial aid thing makes it worse. I'd say you have a shot at USC and Michigan, but the others are all longshots unless you raise your SAT score to around 2250.

How about you rank me now?
