chances

GPA 4.0 weighted, 3.5 or so UW (horrible -_-)
rank: bad, i'm gonna say 75/500
school size: medium to large
Asian male, OOS (Cali)
prospective major: engineering (most likely EE, but i haven't researched much yet), should i apply undecided instead b/c of my low GPA?

Course load: sophmore (ap euro, ap stats, chem h, eng h, chinese2), junior (ap eng lang, ap us, physics IB, pre calc H, chinese3; self studied for calc and physics AP tests, though i don't think the ad coms will notice that), senior (ap calc bc, ap chem, ap eng lit, ap psych)

SAT I: 2160 (800M/710W/650CR)
SAT II: 8002c, projected: 750 for physics and chem

EC's:
math counts california 26th place and 7th place novice news LA county (i think both are worthless b/c they're not top 3 or major statewide events)
school newspaper sports editor
president of an engineering oriented club at school
VP of helping hands (tutoring kids who need help at school, esp in math/science)
Tutoring K-9th grade kids, 4 hours/week
100 hrs at local hospital (volunteering)

do you guys see anything else i could possibly do to offset my low GPA?

thanks

Math Counts doesn't mean anything regardless, as it is for middle school. How competitive is your school? I think that'll make a big difference. Your SATs and schedule are great. I'd say match...
Also, have you calculated your UM GPA?

my school is horrible, we are not competitive at all (we have like 3 people each year to go decent colleges, 5 into uc berkeley, and the rest go to UCLA, SD, I, cal states, etc.)

oh yea, my umich GPA is my UW gpa (3.50 for soph+junior)

I think you're a match, maaaaybe slight reach because of OOS, but don't lose sleep over it. Write awesome essays!

oh crap

i just recalculated my GPA

3.33 -_-

Slight Reach/Reach. There have been people who have gotten in with that low of a GPA...OOS though...I don't know. Give it a try...Apply EARLY! If you're deferred (likely), your senior grades (if they are good) could help you.

slight reach

thanks for the info

if i get good senior grades and apply RD, would it help me? or would i have to apply ED and when i (probably will) get deferred, then they consider my senior grades when a mid-year report is sent

I'd say also apply early.

They don't have ED, but they have early-response. It's in your best interest to apply as early as possible.

wouldn't applying early put me up against even a tougher applicant pool (which diminishes my chances even further -_-)

of course i'm still gonna apply early though

Applying early shows enthusiasm.

Ditto what Christine said. Also, the early appliers are a mix of weak and strong applicants. Many people from my school (in-state) who were weak applicants and got in when they applied early.

bump~~~~~~~~~~

bpppppppppppppp

you live in Cali, why on earth would you come to Michigan and its horrid weather?

b/c the UC system is f-d, like 75% of the admission weight is on your GPA/rank so i'm definitely not getting in any good UC's

bring a coat

bumppppppppppp

bump!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
