what are my chances? =d
also, do you think the fact that i'm a year younger than most people of my grade will help me in admissions?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP! :D

I'm no admissions officer, but I'd think you have a very good chance if you can convey why you want to go to Oberlin.

I know someone at Oberlin right now who was the same age you'll be starting off. I don't see how it helps you; on the contrary it raises some concerns about maturity and college readiness that you may have to address during the admissions process.

As a safety I might suggest some appropriate branch of your state university system.

actually i was also wondering if, for me, Oberlin would be considered a match, a reach, or a safety.
thank you! :D

My guess is you would have a very good chance, depending on how well you make your case for Oberlin. But IMO it would be imprudent to have no other school in back of it. There are others on CC who have made this assumption and were disappointed. Admissions at selective colleges are not 100% predictable these days.

By all means apply if you really want to go there.

If you are talking about the college, your stats compare very favorably to many who have been accepted. Work hard on your "Why Oberlin?" essay to complete the package.

If you are talking about the conservatory, 80% or more of the decision will be based on the audition. There is no way for anyone to make a prediction concerning how your playing stacks up to other applicants.

A lot of people on CC ask about whether it makes a difference if they're a year younger than most other applicants, and the consensus seems to be that it doesn't matter one way or the other.

I'm 17 too, will turn 18 in Winter Term. Everyone in India is my age, though - we start off a year early. So yes, you'll have plenty of company.

safety! definitely a safety

and by the way what's it with being an atheist...? why mention that?

Oberlin is NOT a safety for you. Oberlin's not a safety for anyone, unless they cured cancer and won the Intel thing. (Okay, Oberlin's not that selective, but it's still pretty darn selective.)

I'm an atheist too :-).

i think theres a line on the app that tells you to specify what religion you are.
i dont think it matters, but its there all the same. =d

yeah T__T no where is a safety for anyone anymore.. i just hope i get in somewhere LOL

I don't think there's a line for religion, but there's a line for ethnicity. shrug. Oberlin has a Religious Preference Survey after you're in, though.

common app doesnt ask ur religion, just ur race
