Chances

Hey all. I was just wondering what my chances would be for a place like Rice. I really like that it's a small school with great academic programs, and I am looking for a warm environment (it seems trivial, but i like to be outdoors and i don't want to spend four years snowed in in New England). Also- would i have any semblance of a shot for the Rice/Baylor combined medicine program- it looks rediculously selective. And what is the policy for out of state students- i remember hearing that it's difficult for out-of-state individuals since rice needs to maintain about a 50% population of in-state student. Well, here you go.

Sorry for the long post; thanks for reading.

I'd say you have a really good shot, go for it!

To me, you seem to have the credentials of many students who are accepted at Rice. Focus on your personal statements in your app and keep up the hard work :)

As far as their in-state versus out-of-state admissions... Correct me if I'm wrong, other Rice folks, but Rice is a private university so it has no policy or quota it must maintain. I think Rice gets overwhelmingly more in-state applications than out-of-state (remember, Texas is very, very large) and so it tries for a balanced 50-50% of in- and out-of-state students. So since you're from NY, this actually works in your favor. You have a better chance of getting in than someone exactly like you from TX.

Don't know anything about Rice/Baylor except that it is very difficult to be accepted, sorry.

Correct, Rice has no quota of in-state students, but it nevertheless receives so many applications from the huge state of Texas that they must make it tougher to get in from in-state in order to keep a geographically diverse student body.

awesome app.

Why don't you retake that SAT Math IC? It's easy and you have to send all your SAT Subject Test scores if you want to send any.

Dunno much about the Rice/Baylor either but why not? GPA is perfect, SAT is all in the 700s, and good ECs. You look like ur taking some really tough courses too. Take a shot, it's gotta be worth it. Even if you don't get in, acceptance rates to med schools from Rice are amazing so dun worry.

The only thing I can see that might work against you is the fact that you're a white male... but you live in NY, shouldn't be a problem.

Don't worry, you have a super resume. My son had the same issue with not getting as good a score as expected in the Math 1. However, when he took the second one, he got an 800. When you're taking the most advanced classes and are ahead of the normal schedule you may not be as slick with the earlier math. Don't worry, they understand. My son is now going to be a very happy Junior at Rice and is from NY!

DON'T RETAKE MATH IC!!! There are better things to do with your time! Rice only asks for two subject tests and you have three great scores. (A 660 isn't that bad anyway, especially since Rice will see that you took it as a freshman.)

Anyway, everything looks super. I think you have a great shot. Just remember to take care with the application and let your personality show through. Good luck.
