chances...?

Hello. I'm very interested in attending FSU in the Fall of 2008. I'm looking at others in FL just incase, but FSU is definitely my #1 choice.

SAT: 1160 (will take again in October)
ACT: 25 (will likely take again in October also)
GPA: ~3.5/3.6
Rank: mid 20s/200

Pretty tough schedule. I will have no APs but have taken about 8 dual-enrollment classes through the local CC, and will have 31 credits. Currently have a part-time job and also plan on volunteering at Veterans nursing home located here.

What do you think my chances are? Thanks.

EC's and GPA look good, retake the SAT and score around 12-1300 and you're in. Dual-enrollment looks good, plus working part-time and volunteering shows that you're heavily involved and committed to numerous activities outside of academics.

Your numbers look good, but I agree with the comment above your test scores are at the lower end, your GPA from the dual enrollment classes may have a greater bearing as that is a good indicator of college level performance.

I think it is always a good idea to apply to 4-6 schools to keep all the options open.

Is your GPA weighted or unweighted?

The DE classes are good. The current SAT is iffy.

I'm not real sure how to find my unweighted/weighted. Freshman year I messed around and didnt really take anything seriously. Since then, I havent had a marking period below 95 and have had up to 97 on a few. You think they will look down on this? The dual enrollment courses I am in take letter grades from the HS and I have gotten 90s on all of them, so I have a 4.0 gpa for that. As for the SAT, what score do you think I would need to get in? What about ACT? Thanks for all your help.

Your ACT of 25 is the equivalent of a 1140 SAT. I believe that you have a good chance of admission if you apply early (first decision round) and apply for summer admission (2008).

You can compare your stats to who got in last year:

http://www.ir.fsu.edu/Common_Data_Set/2006-07/C.html

It does seem that FSU puts a higher priority on GPA then Standardized tests. But your current SAT's are within the school's 25-75% range.

What's the current scoring scale for the SAT nowadays? I was the last class to take it with the 1600 scale.

Not sure what you are asking. The current SAT is out of 2400 (800 per section of math/critical reading/writing). The OP's score of 1160 is his math plus critical reading only (or the equivalent of the old score). Many to most schools are still not using the writing section toward admissions (some are using it for placement however).

well do you recommend I apply early with my current sat score? if I were to take the SAT again I would have to wait for the second round of admissions, because the next one isnt until October. Also, if I apply for fall and I am rejected, do they offer you summer or would I have to apply for that?

That depends on how confident you are that your SAT's will go up significantly (above 1200). If you are not, IMO, I think that the "bump" that you get from applying in the first round would be far more beneficial than waiting for a 20-30 point SAT score increase. Sometimes FSU will defer an applicant instead of outright rejecting them. The deferred applicants then don' t find out their admissions decision until about March 28th (the last notification date). This past year, I knew of two deferred candidates. One was ultimately rejected on March 28th, the other was offered summer entrance as terms for admittance. With your stats, I would really just outright apply for summer. It starts at the end of June and runs until the first week of August (a six week session) during which time you take two classes and get to know the campus and college environment in a lower stress/lower population milieu.

Well I'm not sure how much it would go up. I got an 1100 the first time, then 1160. If I was deferred, could I send them another set of scores? I'll still probably take the SAT again, so if I apply, would I be able to give them the newer results if I did better? Also, I will be in-state when it comes to tuition if that helps any...?

Always apply as early as possible - August 1, this year I believe.

It's the best time for many reasons - least competition (supposedly), earliest decision date (get housing number faster) and best chance for university scholarships (first-come, first-served).

If FSU cuts freshman enrollment figure that the bottom 15% of grades and SATs will be excluded, unless some reason exists not to cut a particular person.

Remember that FSU takes the best combination of SAT scores - all your best individual scores. It pays to retest.

And, like they say in the U.S. Marines: "Proper prior preparation prevents pi** poor performance".

0% chance because you're a yankees fan, sorry.

Take your core courses only, like English, Science, History, Math, Social Science. For those courses that you have either AP or Honors class you can add .5 to 1 point to the numeric raw GPA that you received. This will give you the weighted GPA when you add all together to calculate your overall weighted GPA. They go pretty much by what the HS uses for numeric to letter conversion. ie 80% equals a B, 90% is an A ect.

Thanks for all your help...minus loslobos71 lol. Can anyone answer my earlier question? If I am deferred, can I increase my SAT score and send it in to them, or am I locked in once I apply?

I would suggest you call Admissions for your answer. It's too important a question to leave to an anonymous bulletin board.

Updated scores should automatically be sent to FSU if you select that on your test application.

By all means retest ASAP. If FSU defers or wait-lists you your chances are nil. The best you could hope for if deferred would be admission to Summer semester, when it's supposedly easier to be admitted.

If I was deferred, would I have to apply for the summer or would they offer that to me?

They should offer it to you automatically - but call and be sure.

It's not real predictable at the moment due to the budgetary situation.

Are you in-state or out-of-state?

I will be in-state when it comes to tuition because my mom lives in FL...if that helps..?

Being in-state makes a big difference. It's much harder to be admitted OOS. If you qualify for in-state tuition then you're "in-state" I'd say.

The advice is the same - try and get the ACT/SAT up ASAP if you intend to apply by August. Take the most challenging courses you can: a "C" in AP Calculus AB is better than an "A" in something easy.
