Chances

I'm going to be a senior this fall, what would you say my chances of getting into Elon are?

Here are my stats:

GPA: 2.871
ACT: 25
SAT: 560 on CR, 560 on M, 610 on W

4 year of lacrosse, I will play if I get in, but it's only club so it wouldn't help in admissions.

3 years of IM basketball.

3 years of drumline/band.

Hopefully getting a job soon, I've been managing 3 different properties and landscaping them for my parents this summer.

I've done some volunteer work, not a ton.

My counselor told me I should send a letter to all the colleges I apply to explaining part of the reason my GPA is low, which is that I had really bad ADHD and anxiety disorder that weren't really diagnosed well until my sophomore, which really sucked. I don't know how much this will help, but my counselor seemed to think it was worth it to write the letter.

I'm going to retake the ACT in either September or October, maybe both, and I'm expecting to have a 27-28 when it's all said and done.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The odds are probably against you but it's always worth a shot especially if you can get your gpa up. I got off the waitlist at Elon and will be attending this fall.

I had a 2.98
29 ACT
580 CR 680 M 630 W
4 years of V golf / 2 years captain / District Champion
4 years Key Club Treasurer, Historian, President
Tons of volunteer and work experience (20-30 hrs a week since sophomore year)

Good luck Elon is an amazing school.

FWIW, I believe Elon is a school that weights GPA, recalculating your core courses by adding points for Honors and AP classes. If the 2.8 you are showing is unweighted, you might inquire about how they recalculate.

They do recalculate GPA to their own standards. I believe Elon uses a 4.0 scale that ignores elective such as Gym, Art, etc. and add 1 point for Honors classes and 2 points for AP/IB Classes. I could be wrong, but as I think slewnior was suggesting, you could ask the admissions department how they do it to be sure.

You have a good variety for your profile. A job would definitely be helpful. I would try to get a couple of good recommendations from teachers (2), sports coaches (1), people that know you well (an employer would be great for this). If you can provide testimonial of your growth since the beginning of High School, I think your chances would improve.
More importantly, have a strong start (and finish) to your senior year. This would be what would help the most.

My son asked this question last year. Basically, everything is converted to a 4.0 scale. 2 bonus points for AP, 1 bonus point for Honors. And grantb is correct on the fact that they only look at academic "core" courses and ignore PE, Art, etc.

Here's how Admissions described it in an email to me:

When we recalculate a GPA, we will only use a student's core academic
courses such as English, Math, Science, Foreign Language, etc. The break
down for our scale is as follows:

95+=4.0
94-90=3.5
89-85 =3.0
84-80=2.5
79-70=2.0

We award 1 extra point for honors courses and 2 extra points for AP or
IB courses.

Are you sure about that... that method doesn't make any sense. 90-94 is a 3.5? In most schools a 93 or 94 is a 4.0. Basically, that rewards anyone who took a lot of honors to an extreme, and punishes those who don't to an extreme.

I wouldn't say it's punishment... I go to Elon now and had a very high GPA coming in, so maybe I'm biased in saying this, but I also would like to say that your GPA could stand to be higher. I know that you were DXed with ADHD, and GPA isn't everything, but admissions likes to see higher GPAs. Also, your SATs could be a bit higher but they're just around the 50% mark, maybe below by a bit. It's getting progressively more competitive, I'm not sure if your status as an athlete will give you an edge or not. Work experience and commitment to band is great, though. Make sure you have strong essays.

Just chiming in to cofirm that I got the same message that Slewnior got, also in an e-mail from the admissions department. Tough scale.

Also, to the poster before me, the 3.5 for 90-94 is relatively accurate per Elon's standards of grading, which say that a 90-93 is an A-, 94+ is an A. An A- at Elon is a 3.7. The grade points are higher, I assume, because (presumably) the classes you take here are harder than the ones you took in high school. I think it's pretty fair, given that those aren't even for honours classes. I took several honours and a handful of AP classes in high school - in fact, the non-honours ones were all electives such as art and PE, as well as introductory journalism. My GPA per Elon's standards was about a 4.50, which is indicative of a handful of Bs and the C I made in Algebra II, which was still honours, so I got a 3.5 anyway (it's an 80, that's a B- at Elon, which equates to 2.7 quality points on their UNIVERSITY scale, not admissions).
