Chances

I'm going to be a senior this fall, what would you say my chances of getting into Furman are?

Here are my stats:

GPA: 2.871
ACT: 25
SAT: 560 on CR, 560 on M, 610 on W

4 year of lacrosse, I will play if I get in, but it's only club so it wouldn't help in admissions.

3 years of IM basketball.

3 years of drumline/band.

Hopefully getting a job soon, I've been managing 3 different properties and landscaping them for my parents this summer.

I've done some volunteer work, not a ton.

My counselor told me I should send a letter to all the colleges I apply to explaining part of the reason my GPA is low, which is that I had really bad ADHD and anxiety disorder that weren't really diagnosed well until my sophomore, which really sucked. I don't know how much this will help, but my counselor seemed to think it was worth it to write the letter.

I'm going to retake the ACT in either September or October, maybe both, and I'm expecting to have a 27-28 when it's all said and done.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Give it a shot. You'll never know unless you try. Play up you EC's.

I honestly don't know. I agree that you can always give it a shot. Do play up the EC's, and definitely have your counselor send an explanation. Make sure you pay special attention to your essays. They are your opportunity to show the admissions committee what makes you special. Good luck ... Furman is a wonderful school.

well its obviously a reach for me, but would you say its a big reach, a small reach, or just kind of a 50/50?

It's hard to say. Frankly your grades are in the lower 25% of admiited students. You will need something to set you apart. From your description above there's not a alot to set you apart. I would guess that it's a big reach unless you can offset the numbers with something else.

Don't let this website decide what you should do. Never not try something becuase of somebody elses opinion. Always go for your dreams and don't sell yourself short. You will never know what you can accomplish unless you try. My life was filled with challenges and most folks never thought that I would amount to much. Even though I was an average student with no athletic ability and hardly no EC's I managed to be one of the 10% accepted into the Naval Academy (on my third and last try) and proudly graduated in the middle of my class. If I had posted my stats on this board most folks would have said that I had little to no chance of being accepted. Good luck

well im pretty athletic and our lacrosse team won the state championship this past season, and were probably going to win again this season, and im gonna start this year. also, no to brag or anything, but i write very good essays, so that will probably help me.
and thanks for the encouragment as well. i definitely am going to apply to all the schools i want to, regardless of what anyone tells me. and thats awesome that you went to navy, i know a few people that have graduated and a couple more that attend now, and they all say it was or has been an amazing experience.

I think that Furman is a bit of a reach, with your gpa. However, If you're from the northeast, you stand a much better chance - the school is actively seeking to recruit from that part of the country.

Consider applying Early Admission. Work hard on improving your GPA this upcoming fall semester, then send Furman a copy of your grades showing your improvement.
