I am a white male from a public high school in MA, I've got an unweighted gpa of 3.8, having taken almost all of the honors and AP classes available to me, my class rank is about 30 out of 400, and I scored a 2000 on the SAT's (I may retake them). My significant extra-curriculars are: varsity tennis, editor for the school newspaper, NHS member, and a member of a peer mediation program. I've served about 100 hours of community service (mostly a homeless meals program), and worked at my local library during the summer for three years, as well as part time during the school year for one year.

What do you think my chances are? What do you think I should focus on improving? Thanks a bunch :)

Hi there -

You should definitely bring up your SATs (the avg score in each section for accepted students to Tufts is ~717). As a Mass resident, you will be facing fierce competition from other students with similar extracurriculars, so make sure to highlight whatever are your strongest, most unique points. I'd put Tufts as a reach for you, but certainly not an impossible one. If, by chance, it's your first choice, applying ED would certainly help to differentiate your applicationf rom those of other Mass applicants.

Good luck!

I think you might consider retaking the SAT as lolabelle already said. You only need to pull it up a little. I think your GPA is fine, my daughter got in with a 3.7 from a private high school in MA. Her SAT score was 1490. Your EC's are very good, although not particularly distinctive. I like lolabelle's suggestion of highlighting your uniqueness. Also emphasize your community service, I think Tufts likes that. Good luck!
