Chances?

I know this is an old thread, but I really think you should not waste your application fee in applying to Emory. Apply to Oxford. Your chances are much greater. I have 3 friends I met this summer in Atlanta who have been rejected from Emory with SATs around 1300 and close to 4.0 GPAs. None of them got in. I don't want to say you have no shot because there is no sure thing in the admissions game, but definitely consider Oxford. It will challenge you a lot more than you think, and you will be at Emory as a Junior.

Thanks for being blunt kcooper. Yeah, I've been thinking of Oxford but quick question though. If I get rejected ED by Emory, can I apply RD to Oxford? Just a thought. Though most likely I'll just apply to another school.

Here's a more organized lists of what I was up to in high school. Chance me please. :)

I finished writing my long essay and it's pretty good (not to brag or anything; it's my best writing work ever)

Mika08,

Notwithstanding that kcooper24 (and others) may be offering advice with good intent, do not be persuaded to give up hope altogether of gaining admission to Emory via ED I.

As has been pointed out, your SAT scores put you at a disadvantage; however, your GPA and other factors (URM status and first in family to attend college) may be an offset. It's a stretch for you, but if you stay optimistic and prepare your application well, there's still hope.

If you have not already done so, make sure that your essays are read and reviewed by a teacher who can offer you some candid feedback and pointers for how you might develop the best organized, most cogent representation of who you are. Don't hesitate to contact Emory's Office of Admission if you have any specific questions you need answered. Jean Jordan is the Dir. of Admission, and although she is usually very busy, she or one of the other Admision Counselors are quite willing to be of assistance. As well, make certain that all your Guidance Counselor and Teacher recommendations are strong. These recommendations will also play a part in Emory's decision-making process.

Regarding Oxford College, it is entirely possible to apply there RD if need be. If you apply ED I to Emory, and you are accepted, you will not need to submit any more applications, and indeed will need to withdraw any applications submitted elsewhere. If you are deferred or denied admission to Emory, you still have sufficient time after hearing Emory's admission decision to decide on the necessity to apply elsewhere. (You will hear about the ED I decision around Dec. 15, and the RD application deadline for Oxford is Jan. 15.) As a contingency, this would not be a bad admission strategy. Just be sure to plan for the contingency and begin preparation of this and other applications soon after you've finished your ED I application for Emory.

Good luck!

Well as Norcal Dad said, I am only trying to help. I was just trying to point out that it's a long reach. But I guess I should not have said to not apply. There is nothing wrong with thinking big. But yes, if you get rejected ED from Emory you may still apply to Oxford, and you definitely should if that becomes the case.

Thanks you two for the great advice. And I totally understand what you mean kcooper24. You're just trying to help.

Anywho, I sent in my part 2 application to Emory yesturday morning. I hope I get accepted, the wait is making me nervous, lol.

Thanks everyone for the chances and all that jazz. I'll keep everyone updated. Good luck to everyone applying ED!!! I hope to see all of you in Emory next fall (given if I'm accepted of course)

:)
