Chances?

Hello.

I assure you, that my SATs are not all 800 and my GPA is less than 4. CMU is not a safety for me :D.

Now that you got this far:

Asian male, born in China, go to a very very competitive HS in NYC.

GPA: 87.8/100. My average goes:
Freshman: 85, 85
Sophomore: 79, 86
Junior: 92, 93
So it's going up...

SAT: 800M, 600CR, 730W. I'm taking it again in October.

SATIIs:
Math 2: 800
Physics: 790
Chem: 720
Math 1: 750
Can I only put my math 2 and physics scores on my app (I know the colleges will see all of them anyway)?

APs:
Comp-Sci AB: 5

Others:
AIME qualifier (AMC: 111, AIME: 5, I think?)

ECs:
NYC Math Team
CS Team
Engineering Team
Robotics Team
Fencing Team (benchwarmer...)

Summer jobs:
Computer technician at jewelry company
Software developer at Morgan Stanley

I will have two really good recs from an english teacher and my comp-sci teacher, and an alumni rec from a CMU alum.

I am applying ED to CIT for electrical and computer engineering.

So, how do I look?

Bumpity bump?

Come on, you can insult me all you want!!!

Bump

10 chars...

Good luck. Your stats are better than our son's. Your chances are as good as the others. This one of those times in your life when you have done all you can do and what remains is out of your control. Our opinion doesn't matter, so why give it.

Oh.

Well, thanks. I guess I should worry more about my essays and stuff and not things like these.

Bump?

A senior year update:

ECs (in addition to above):
Computer Science team (captain/coach)
Science Olympiad
Quiz Bowl

ACT:
M: 36
S: 36
E: 35
R: 29
Essay: 8
Comp: 34

Classes:
AP Calc BC
AP Physics C
Systems Programming
Engineering Mechanics
Existentialism
Government
Advanced Cisco Networking

Other:
National Merit Semifinalist

I'm going to Sleeping Bag Weekend tomorrow, and I'm applying ED to CIT for ECE.

Chances any better?

I see you slacked off during the ACT... get bored? ... and then suddenly start caring again halfway through the test?

CMU doesn't give National Merit money. Zero, none. What is the name of your oh-so-competitive HS?

You have a pretty good chance.

compared to my stats I had entering yours seems to be better. Hope that helps...

geez...man those stats are pretty dang strong.

I'm sure that you and I both know that you have a real good chance of getting in. Its kind of obvious where you stand with the majority of the applicant pool. I swear man its like you're trying to show off to everyone with these stats. LOL just kidding.

Well, my GPA is my very weak part. The average in my school is around 92.

Honestly I'm not trying to show off lol.

Thanks for the responses!

i think you'll get in.
i am in similar situation--i came from china four years ago--so i understand the accomplishment of getting a 600 on your SAT reading.
working at morgan stanley sounds pretty impressive to me. flaunt ("talk about" is the better euphemism) it in the app or the interview.
even with the weakness in reading scores, you are a strong candidate for CMU. i wish you the best of luck.

Thanks!

I'm done with my ED app. I'm giving it a few more lookovers then mailing it tomorrow.

Update:

October SAT scores: 800M, 690CR, 620W

Superscore is: 800M, 690CR, 730W = 2220

Question: What part of the stats I've posted so far do you think will help me the most?

Bumpity bump...

Your recommendations will trump any score or GPA.

Hmm, cool.

I think they should be pretty good. How much will the alum rec help?

CMU app is in the mail!
