Chances

Copied from the "College Search and Selection" Thread:
SAT I: 760 CR, 760 Wr, 610 M
GPA: 4.0 but AP Chem will probably lower it
AP Euro: 4
I'm currently taking AP Spanish, AP Chem, and AP English.
I also took two honors courses last year.
ECs: 2 years technical theater (which I consider my main EC because it takes up an insane amount of time)
2 years of piano
1 year mock trial
4 years art club
2 years German club
4 years volunteering at assisted living home
Attended UARTS precollege summer of 2006
Awards: I've won several for my individual classes and I placed nationally for
my score on the National Spanish Exam. Additionally, I am a member
of the National Hispanic Honors Society.
Ethnicity: Filipino-Chinese

I attend a private all-girls Catholic school. I know my ECs are weak but I address that in my college essay.

Hmm...Oberlin would rather see dedicated passions than a myriad of ECs. I think you have some focused ECs in the arts, so not too much worry there.

3 AP courses is fine given the context of your school. How many APs are offered?

Not counting the AP art classes, there are about 10 APs offered (including the various AP language courses). Because it's a rigorous school most people graduate having taken no more than 5 AP classes.

I'm in the exact same boat as you, however with my school only offering 7 APs, and many graduates going to top schools having taken only 2-3. Rigor is a factor.

A factor Oberlin should see when they see the school profile. I think you have decent chances, just make sure your essay is good.

I'm actually applying to Oberlin too :)

Yay! Thanks for your input! Out of mere curiosity,OniLawliet, what are your ECs?

Hmm...My ECs? Like my passions throughout HS, you mean?

I've done visual arts for all four years of HS, having art work displayed in local shows over the summer and during the school year (yet none of these shows offered awards, so I can't play that up too much in my app.) But yeah, mainly visual arts. I've also studied Japanese independently in my sophomore and junior years, studying abroad in Tokyo the summer before senior year, and now taking community college level classes of the language.

Um...Let's see....I'm VP of National Art Honor Society at my school, a Student Recruitment Committee Member, VP of Japanese Animation and Culture at my CC...

That's the extent of them really. I haven't really done any community service..

Guys, I wouldn't worry terribly much about things like number of extracurricular activities, and years doing them and whatnot. Oberlin is simply a machine, and going to reject you for any single perceived shortfalling. Yes, it's important that you show dedication- but as an applicant, there's a lot more to the picture, and I wouldn't worry too much about any single thing. You are a human being, not a list of credentials.

Fanatic: I presume you meant "Oberlin is NOT simply a machine...." Right?

I think he meant that, yeah.

I think you have a pretty good chance.

Thanks, Fanatic. It was just intimidating to look at other people's stats and see that they're doing a hundred things and still managing to do well in school. I am quite amazed by it all.

Haha, yes, that's what I meant. My bad.
