Chances?

Hey just wondering my chances of getting into williams. I have recently talked to a coach there for playing football(he's called me about 20-30 times already) and they asked me to come out there on the WoW visit for free(they asked me i didnt apply.)

my stats:

GPA: i think 3.68 to 3.73 with a rigorous course schedule
(ap classes 4 yr foreign language)-only reason its so low is b/c of freshman year i think

ACT: 27
never taken SAT's before

Hispanic American
Geography: Michigan, small rural town
very low income family ( as in less than $20,000)
Noone has ever even graduated high school in my entire family(this includes mother, father(deceased at age 3), sisters, brothers, etc.)

Extracurriculars:
Besides football(3 yr varsity-captain/various awards) and track(4 yr varsity-captain/various awards/state hurdler) I have:
NHS
BPA
Quiz Bowl
Chess Club
Varsity Club

with the two mentioned (NHS AND BPA) taking the most time(BPA the most)

I also work a job at Marco's Pizza in a nearby town to help support my family

My essays will probably consists of hardships to a loss of father, low income in a small town, and having to work a job.

whaddya guys think?

Oh just wondering how many people on average go on the windows for williams visit? as far as i know i am the only one around the mid-michigan area, unless there is someone else on here who has done it?

Your GPA is not in Williams sweet spot and your ACT score at 27 is well below the grade for acceptance. Williams brings in a class of about 525 from an application pool now approaching ten thousand.

Although you are not screaming our to be an academic exemption, you really should work the coaching contact on the football team if attending Williams is something you really want to do. Remember, if you decide to play football, that will be a major factor in your collegiate career.

Williams is one of the most competitive Liberal Arts colleges in the country. You need to consider your high school curriculum and think about whether you will be successful at Williams. For example, you did not give much information about your advanced placement curriculum and results.

Good luck!

So should i even consider applying?

And what do you mean by "Playing football will be a major factor?"

And as for the coaching contact, I wasn't kidding when I said that I have received over 20 calls from him, they seemed pretty interested.

I actually fly out to Williams this upcoming thursday to stay four days and travel with the football team when they face Wesleyan.

How much of an impact could a coaches' decision make on applying?

Gonzo - you have a good chance, notwithstanding your ACT scores. A coach's "tip" will be very big in the admissions process at Williams. Plus you're hispanic and from a low-income background - both of those facors will help in the admissions process too. When you make your visit to Williams, you'll probably find out whether the coach is willing to tip you and that will be huge in terms of your opportunities. Each football coach in the NESCAC has about 15 tips per year that give football applicants a boost through the admissions process. The number of calls you have received from the coach indicates a high likelihood that the coach is willing to use a tip on you.

Wow, is this true? Well in that case, you just made me a heck of a lot happier tora :)

Yeah i understand my ACT scores are sub-par, but i mean a test can only examine so much, and plus i am terrible at test taking in general so thats why it isnt top notch.

Gonzo - One other important piece of information that I forgot to mention. If the Williams' coach is willing to tip you, you pretty much have to apply early decision. This is due to the fact that the number of tips is limited to 15 for football. As a result, the coach wants to be certain that each applicant he tips is fully committed to going to Williams. I think that application deadline for early decision candidates at Williams is something like Nov. 10 so you'll need to finish your application very soon after you return from your trip if you decide that you want to go to Williams.

Yeah tora, I have already decided that I will apply early, and yes the deadline is Nov. 10th.

Quick question though, I don't know if you are familiar with the common application, but how do I get the teacher's recommendations and counselor's midterm reports online? Do they have to have an account on the common app website as well or do they just submit them to the college through the mail?

Go here https://app.commonapp.org/CommonApp/DownloadForms.aspx
and you can downdload all the forms. I believe that the recommenders are supposed to use the mail to submit their recommendations.

Gonzo: You look like a very interesting candidate. While you're traveling with the Williams team, why not check out Wesleyan too?

Thanks tora, but what if the college receives the supplements late? Sorry I have all of these questions, I'm quite new to the online applying experience.

And as for Wesleyan froshdad, Thanks for the offer. I haven't really looked into the school but I am open for anything, I'm just trying to find the best possible college for me.

I think that the key is for you to get everything that's in your control (your application and essays) postmarked and off to Williams by Nov 10. You should press the teachers and such to complete their recommendations by Nov 10 but I don't think that Williams will penalize you if a teacher blows a deadline off and drops your recommendation in the mail a couple of days after the deadline. The important thing to keep in mind is that the time frame for early decisions is tight (only about a month from start to finish) so you want to be sure that Williams has your full application as early in the process as possible.

I agree with torasee. My opinion is that you are in if you follow torasee's advice. Remember, however, that your ACT scores are low for Williams and that the academics are challenging even for high scorers.

Alright, sounds great. I appreciate your help :)

Yes, I understand that my ACT score is below Williams average, but I believe that there is more to a person than just a test score. But if they think of me as just another statistic instead of an actual person, then I can always apply somewhere else.

And as for the academics: this is one of the main reasons that actually attract me to colleges. I want the hardest possible courses I can take that interest me, so that even if I dont get top notch scores, I still come out with a quality education. I believe that Williams can supply me with such.

What about track at williams? The football coach also wanted me to look into it and talk to the track coach. Is it possible to get tipped for track as well?

You only need one tip - either sport will do it.
