I know Georgetown is a huge reach for me, but its my first choice. I am realistic however and have a couple of safeties as well.

ECs- not a laundry list, but I put my heart and soul into everything I do

I spent my junior year abroad in Izmir, Turkey.
I lived for a year in a Muslim family and learned fluent Turkish.
If I hadn't gone abroad my gpa would be higher, I would have been able to take more AP classes, and my SAT scores would have probably been higher as well. (not complaining because the year was amazing) All of my classes were in Turkish, so this provided for some bad grades in the beginning (not counted in gpa). This is all explained in my gc's recommendation.

1st job was at Fresh City restaurant- 20 hrs a week (started working in freshman year)
now work at 5 star restaurant - 15-20 hrs a week

great recommendations/ interview went very well
global issue essay was about genocide in Darfur
personal essay was about how I was tricked into eating animal feet and brain at a soup house in Turkey (didn't know Turkish yet)- tied into character

I know its a reach but hopefully there are other aspects of my application that will override the mediocre standardized test scores?

Other schools applying to: American, GW, Washington St. Louis, Northwestern, Brandeis, Barnard, Macalester, Lewis and Clark, Harvard (just for fun)

your background may give you a little advantage
your scores are sadly way too low for wash u and Harvard and Macalester and Northwestern. You need to retake
you've got nice EC's. If you put your heart and soul into everything, however, then why aren't the captain of your civil rights team or the president of your National Frencch Honrs Society? There's simply no evidence that you put your heart and soul into them even if you claim to do so

sorry our Language Honors Societies and our Civil Rights Team aren't structured like that in my High School. Music is probably my main dedication in hs outside of work.

also I'm only applying to Wash U because of my dad (he and my aunt both went there.) Georgetown is my first choice

I agree with JohnC613's estimate of your chances at Harvard, WUSL, Northwestern and Macalester.

Why not apply to more places where you are likely to be accepted (or at least have a decent chance)? Then you will have more schools to actually choose from once the replies come in.

As far as Georgetown, the test scores are simply too low;--sorry. (although you should apply there anyway if it's your "dream school".)

I suggest you try for Brandeis, Lewis and Clark--and if you like music for a major, consider Oberlin, Grinnell, University of Cincinnati, NYU, and maybe USC (lots of international students there).

Good luck.

jewish girl + jewish boy===== loveeee lol try to see what you can improve, improve it... get some safety schools that you know you will get into. you have culture. good job sweetie.

At this point I know there's nothing I can do about the SAT I. The thing is, that when I was abroad, I literally lost a year of math, and of even basic English. I'm not complaining because I knew this was probably going to be the tradeoff of going to a less known country on exchange. I am planning, however, to take the SAT II's again and do much better. I'm planning on my major being International Relations if this helps at all.

I think that you should apply to all your schools that you have posted. Sure, theres no guarantee that you will get into every school that you applied to, but isnt that the whole point. College is about taking chances and risks and that concept squeezes into the admission process as well. There are colleges were I believe I dont have a shot at and people have told me that, but that isnt going to stop me from applying. Just explain your situation as best as possible and if a college denies you its their losss.

Best of luck chica!

which school did you go to in Turkey??

I went to Camlaralti Koleji in Hatay, Izmir. Where do you go to school?

Oh, I'm in the U.S. But Turkey would probably be a really nice place to go to school. I've heard Izmir is a beautiful city.

It is gorgeous, and I can't wait to go back to visit my family.

Oh so you have family back there??

I'm sorry, I should have made that more clear. I can't wait to go visit my host family. We aren't related, but I really love them like a second family.

Oh wow, that's really nice.
