I've also been accepted at Tennessee and a couple smaller LAC's. I'll probably be deciding between Tennessee and Auburn (of course, in the VERY unlikely event I get into UVa, I'll go there). What about you?

Ya i thought about Uva as well but figured id get yelled at by their adcom for even trying....
Umm... other than auburn, so far i have just heard from ohio state (which i got into and into their honors college), deferred at Rose-hulman, and still waiting on my top 3 choices (Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Clemson)

2 of my cousins go to VA Tech and my parents wanted me to apply there but no way do I want to go there. Clemson sounds good. Smaller schools that I really like but haven't heard from yet are Rollins, Furman, and URichmond--all private and really expensive however, so not only do I have to get in, I'd need to get some merit aid. Congrats on honors college at Ohio State. So I'm guessing Auburn is not high on your list?

Well, considering i applied based on what people told me about it, and not me personally going to see it, its currently not on the top. But if i go to see it and like the school it could be, also depends on how much aid they would give me. And ya i thought about furman too, they kept sending me mail and stuff but i decided it was probably to expensive, plus they didnt' offer my major (chemical engineering)

Hey guys, I work in the admissions department as a student counselor (I may have even called some of you/will be calling to congratulate you on your acceptance to Auburn!) so if you have any questions feel free to ask me. I'll do my best to answer them!

Hi AUlostchick. I received a call a couple weeks ago, perhaps it was you...

Since you have so kindly offered to answer any questions I have, I'll take advantage of the opportunity.

When will we receive notice about our non-resident scholarships? I was told notification would begin after December 1st and I haven't heard anything yet. Also, do you know how the GPA's are calculated for those?

I was given an application as a semi-finalist for the Academic Elite scholarships. Do you know how many people are given one of these? Do you happen to know any specifics about the selection process and the awards given out?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

War Eagle! (All the e-mails I get from Auburn end with this. Why don't they just change the mascot to the Eagles rather than be one of the 389357992 colleges called the Tigers?)

I know they HAVE started sending out-of-state scholarship packets. They are generally dispensed after in-state scholarships, so you may not hear until January (since the offices close tomorrow, not all of the packets may be mailed until offices start work again on 1/3). I don't know what you mean about GPA's being calculated? From what I've seen, Auburn just takes the GPA you send them with your transcript.

(from the website)
Elite Scholarships
The University Scholarship Committee invites a select group of incoming freshmen, usually those with a minimum 34 ACT or 1500 SAT score and 3.5 high school GPA as of the December 1 Freshman Scholarship priority deadline, to apply for up to six of Auburn’s most prestigious scholarships. Following application review by the Committee, 12-14 finalists are invited to campus in February to interview. Elite Scholars receive an additional $10,000-$32,000 over four years ($2,500-$8,000 per year).
for more scholarship information, go to auburn.edu >> prospective students >>scholarships >>non-resident scholarships.

Where are you from? Why did you choose Auburn? I'm always interested to know how people from other areas learn about Auburn. I live about an hour away from Auburn and grew up an Auburn football fan, so I knew it was where I wanted to go for a long time.

War Eagle is our battle cry, and it has nothing to do with our mascot, Aubie the Tiger. We have an eagle named Nova (or War Eagle VII) that is released at most every home game which circles the field and lands in the middle of the 50-yard line. We love being Tigers but we also shout War Eagle!

Ok, ya that answers my GPA question. Some schools have super secret formulas, but I guess Auburn doesn't, that's a plus.

Hmm, they must really keep the Academic Elite Scholarship stuff secret if you work in the admissions office and don't know the inside scoop about them.

I'm from the Chicago area. I chose two "southern" schools to apply to because I'm interested the atmosphere at an SEC school. Auburn seemed to have a very good scholarship program.

I'm not sure how realistic it is for me to eventually attend Auburn because it's far from home and my parents are very concerned that I wouldn't be able to adjust well to the life style there. But if I get a good financial offer, then I will do all in my power to visit and give it a shot.

I know quite a few out-of-staters. (my best friend here is from Cincinnati, Ohio) It's definitely an adjustment to southern culture, but no different than if you moved to any other part of the country. It's probably more of an adjustment for a southerner to move out than a northerner to move in. My friend from Ohio said the main thing she had to adjust to is all the religious stuff. She's an atheist and she wasn't expecting there to be churches on every corner and businesses to actually promote Christianity on their signs (there's a restaurant called Jim Bob's Chicken Fingers that always has a jesus fish and a bible verse or saying on their sign). I'm not religious either, but since I grew up in Alabama I was just used to it. She also still, even after being here 2 1/2 years, has trouble understanding the accent occasionally, and we have weird random phrases that apparently people don't say in other parts of the country that she is boggled by.

As for my job, I don't actually have any say as to what goes on with scholarships or admission. I just know how to find stuff out because I know the website like the back of my hand pretty much now. Mainly my job is concerning calling prospective students and either encouraging them to apply, making sure they know all the stuff they need for a complete application, and then calling them to congrat on being accepted and get their questions about things. I do know that if you even qualify for an Elite scholarship you most likely are going to get a big ol sum of money from us, as long as you had all your stuff in by Dec 1 which seems like you did. You may or may not get the Elite scholarship but you're definitely looking at a regular academic scholarship that is at least 2/3 tuition if not all tuition (depends on your GPA, you definitely have the test scores for all tuition but I think the GPA has to be a 3.75+ for it).

As for the atmosphere at an SEC school, Auburn football is something you can really only experience first-hand. Watching it on tv is fine and dandy, but actually being there is... there are no words. Amazing doesn't even describe it properly.

I would definitely recommend visiting if at all possible because honestly if you visit Auburn and don't immediately love it, it's not for you. People are just so nice here, generally, I really think it makes an impression on prospective students who visit. And definitely try to visit when class is in full session (your spring break would be a good time because it probably doesn't line up with ours) so you get the true feeling for the mass of people. I just hope if you visit in the spring, the crazy preacher people aren't around. I bet we lose more prospects that week because there's crazy people shouting about the bible or holding huge signs with aborted fetuses on them or something. It seems like there's about a two-week period where all the crazies descend.

AUlostchick, i'm from cinci as well, but im from the south so I think i should love Auburn

I'm not Christian myself, but as long as most people respect my background, which I assume they will, that should be fine.

Just got my presidential scholarship letter in the mail today, which is exciting. I'll wait until I hear if I'm invited to Elite Scholarship day and then book a visit whether I am or not, which I anticipate it's probably a long shot because I don't have overwhelmingly impressive extracirricular activities.

Thanks for your help. Look forward to visiting soon. Can't wait to see if I feel that "spark."

The best way to come in is through Atlanta right? And then I guess if it's my parents and me, renting a car would be cheaper than taking a shuttle right?

Hopefully Auburn defends some SEC honor by beating Clemson.

AUlostchick, with my stats (orginal post) of 3.73 and a 1350/1990 (out of state) should i get some scholarships? i havent received any notification yet....

esmitty, You definitely qualify for a heritage scholarship which is 2/3 out of state tuition (basically you would just pay in-state). That's not saying you are guaranteed to get it, but that is what you qualify for. Assuming you got all your materials in by Dec 1, you would PROBABLY get it. You can expect to hear back in January sometime if you haven't heard yet.

notthatgood, yes the best way is to fly into Atlanta. As for renting a car, it depends on what you want to do. If you just want to stay near campus and get the feel for downtown, you wouldn't need a car because the express 85 shuttle drops you off right in front of the AU hotel which is in on the main drag of College St. However, if you want to go check out the more outer areas, like where the mall or wal-mart are, then you would want to rent a car and drive because those are not really in walking distance. It's a good 1.5-2 hour drive though, in case you didn't know, from Atlanta.

As for the religion thing, it's just that we get peddlers trying to give you chick tracts and talk about Jesus alot, or the Gideons handing out their little green bibles. It doesn't have to do with the students, it's just random people who stand on corners or get permission from the admins to be on campus. Personally, I just ignore them. I've never seen anyone get harassed or anything for being not Christian or anything like that by other students.

Yea i applied before dec 1st.....don't know if they received my transcript and all that before then (they should have) so ya that would be great to hear back....should i call and ask possibly or just wait? Also wat about the honors college? on the website it says i qualify for applying, when do i receive that application?

how long before Dec 1? it actually depends on when your application was complete (including transcript) on whether you qualify or not. If you tell me when you got your acceptance letter, it would help. You wouldn't be able to call and ask right now because offices closed yesterday for x-mas break and they won't be open again until jan 3. For the honors college, I think they typically send you an application for that 2-3 weeks after you receive your acceptance letter, but again, with christmas break it will probably be longer. From what I've seen in my office, they seem to be running behind a bit on things, so don't be discouraged if you don't get anything right away. I would wait until at least the middle of Jan to start worrying about it. Then you can call and talk to someone (admissions or scholarship office) about it.

i got my acceptance letter around december 12th (somewhere around there).

Additional Information Dec 03, 2007
Web App Fee $25 Nov 15, 2007
High School Transcript Dec 03, 2007
SAT or ACT Test Score Nov 19, 2007
this is what it says online....although my counseler assured me my transcript and additional info would be there before dec 1st.....could this just be that they didnt process it until december 3rd and i'm still qualified. I would be mad at my counseler if she didnt send it in on time

I'm not completely sure, because I think I have seen some people getting scholarship information who had everything but their transcripts in by Dec 1. it's also possible that Auburn may have just processed it that day (that's the first monday after Dec 1st, which was a Saturday) but if it was postmarked by Dec 1st then they recognized that it was sent before then. Like it could've been received on the 30th of Nov (which was a friday) but not put into the computer until the next monday the 3rd. I'm not 100% sure on this though. I would call admissions when school gets back in session.

cool thx AUlostchick

Congrats nothatgood4! My son also received his presidential scholarship letter. We're from the north too, in Indiana about 75 min southeast of Chicago. We have plans to go down on Jan 18th for the Talon Day. DS is hoping for a scholarship from the engineering dept also, to cover room and board. He has ful ride offers from 2 other schools, but Auburn has been his first choice since he went to an engineering camp there a couple of years ago.

Hey hoosiermama, congrats on your son's scholarship! Talons Day is a really good experience. There's a chance to talk to deans of every college (the dean of engineering is very nice, he used to be the pastor at my grandmother's church actually). And you can also talk to the head scholarship adviser and other financial aid people as well.
(This is assuming that Talons Day is similar to how it was in 2005 when I went, I know it has grown since then- 2005 was the first year for it- but the basics should still be the same.)

I hope your son hears back about engineering scholarships! That is a great way to cover other expenses. He should hear back around February/March, I think. Also, there are a couple of engineering departments that require separate applications (civil, polymer/fiber, and chemical, says the website) so if he is in any of those, he would need to send in a separate application.
