Chances?

Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White
State of Residence: PA

Class of 2009

Academic Background
Weighted GPA: 4.23
SAT Critical Reading: 660
SAT Math: 690
SAT Writing: 680
Combined SAT: 2030
ACT Composite: N/A (taking in February)

I am currently a junior at a highly competitive high school in PA. I have basically taken all AP and honors courses that I have had the opportunity to take (almost), which is 4 APs and 8 honors courses including my current junior year. I plan to take several AP and honors courses senior year as well. I play soccer and run track for my high school and I am also involved in several ECAs.

High School Background

HS Type: Independent Private College Preparatory High School
Class Rank: School doesn't give out class rank but I'm guessing at least top 10% out of 285 students

SAT II Subject Tests: N/A (taking in June)

So what do you think my chances are at being accepted into Villanova or any other colleges in general (average, competitive, very competitive)? I've only taken the SATs once and my math potential is probably in the high 700s (i aced the first 2 sections, but did not manage my time well enough on the third section). Also, I'm sure I can improve my verbal and writing section scores as well. I know I still have some time before applying to colleges but I just want to get a feel for where I'm at i guess.

Thanks

bump from a while ago haha

update: SATs: 2110

Villanova takes only CR and Math.

Will you apply to the business school ?

oh sorry i posted my combined score because collegeboard had a writing section range.. but i would not be applying to the business school. I plan to major in an engineering field.

So what are your CR and Math scores then :P

oh right: 1360 .. not much improvement .. probably doesn't help my chances much

I think, and by no means am I an expert, you have good chances. Your GPA is extremely good, your SAT is a bit above average. The fact you're applying for engineering is helpful. From what I can see, perhaps the bad thing going for you is that Villanova is trying to get away from the "Vanillanova" and trying to become more diverse. As a White guy from Pennsylvania you wouldn't bring much diversity.

The rest would depend on your ECs, essay, recommendations etc. Again I think you have a pretty good shot.

I was accepted EA, white guy from NY. They have a required essay which I think is very important- I think it helped me to get in majorly as it was about a topic that hit close to home for me and I was able to write a strong essay on it.

Thanks. I just visited today and I loved it. I understand the diversity factor (vanillanova lmao) and my average SAT score. But I'm just curious.. would I have a decent chance at the business school or would that be considered a reach for me. My visit today has made me reconsider applying to the business. I was also surprised that Nova only enrolls 1,500 students. Any thoughts?

that's good to know. what were your stats and what school did you apply to?

AKittka, if you are asking me, I applied to the school of business. My twin brother applied to the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. We both got in :D

FYI: From what I understand, if you want to switch schools, iyou vitrually reapply. And I asked the associate dean of the business school (there may be some bias here). It is supposedly easier to go Liberal Arts from Business than vice versa.

yeah i imagine it would be more difficult to transfer to the business school.. were your stats similar to mine? do you think i would have a decent chance of getting into the business school? or is it not worth the risk since i really would like to get into nova

--update--

ACT: 33
SAT I: 1380/2130

i think my ACT score helps me, but i think my SAT score might bring it down a little. anymore opinions?

I think you will be just fine...the business school is starting a new curriculum this fall. Try to make some contact with the associate dean or Dean Danko and ask some thoughtful, insightful questions. They are making freshman take a year long class that exposes them to all aspects of business(6 credits) and they are also combining accounting and finance(level 1, I think, also for 6 credits) classes. I think your 33 on the ACT is your ace, but let them see both scores. You have a chance to shine in your Villanova and Common Application essays. My s will be a freshman in the b school in August. Good luck....Nova is a great school. My oldest d graduated in 05 from the b school and loved it!!!

Test scores aren't everything. I made it in with an 1980 SAT / 30 ACT. I'm in the business school too.

Only send ACT, not SAT

meadesport: i've sent Villanova everything. SAT I, subject tests, and ACT. I never expected to do so well on the ACT so I just sent my SAT scores to Villanova because it's been one of my top choices since i've started taking all of these tests,
