I'm planning on applying to Andover, Deerfield, and Middlesex for freshman year. My father, grandfather, and great grandfather all attended Andover. I have quite a few ECs including Girl Scouts since kindergarten, piano, bass clarinet, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, volunteer work at local historical museum, student council, civil rights team.

However, I got in the 85th percentile total on the SSAT's, and got A's, B's and one C (in band) for grades this term.

What do you think my chances are for getting into any of my schools? Do you have any recommendations for other school possibilities? And out of my top three, which one do I have the best chance of getting into?

You definately have a shot at it. "only" 85? That's good. don't get discouraged by the extremly intelligent people on CC. Your EC"s look ggood. Have you won any awards or anything? That would help. You probably have the best chance at Middlesex, because I'm guessing it's the least selective out of te 3. I don't know how much Andover puts legacy into consideration, so don't take my word for it. How were your essays, and recs?

No special awards for the most part. Went to regional spelling bee a few years ago, but didn't win anything special. I used to do Oddesy of the Mind as well, an my team almost placed, haha. I am still working on my essays, and I'm pretty confident on my recs

So include that you won your school's spelling bee, and moved onto regionals's. Spice up your app. Say first place spelling bee in my school. Say Odyssey of the Mind, 1st place. You gotta spice some stuff up.

Andover is my first choice. I would absolutely love to go there, but if they don't take legacies into consideration, I probably won't get in. Any other opinions on which school my best chance is at??

Are you competitive in any of the sports you have listed. And if so, did you contact any of the coaches to see if any could watch you in action. Field hockey season being complete it is difficult to get that done now, but if your coach is known to the Andover coach, often a good recommendation will help. Field hockey is a relatively small world (as compared to soccer/basketball/etc). If you are competitive in ice hockey (are you going to the Polar Bear tomorrow type competitive), they by all means contact the coach ASAP. While recreational level athletics are good to see from a holistic evaluation, they will not make a significant difference in chances, beyond keeping you form being pegged as brain in a jar (sorry to use such terms, but many applicants think that having great academic credentials is enough at these schools - it is not).

I've been playing field hockey since I was 9 or so, so I would say I'm pretty good. Not team superstar or anything, but one of the best defensive players. I played on the local recreational team until 6th grade. There is an actual school team in 7th an 8th grade, which I played on last year, and this past fall. I play indoor at Seacoast United in winter and spring.

Is Seacoast United as well know for field hockey as soccer? If so, and if you play on a competitive (not just rec) team, than that might be in your favor. 85% is fine on the SSAT....and the C should't hurt you as it is not in an academic core subject. The legacy won't hurt and should help a bit, at least.

wow a legacy. I wouldn't be too worried, especially since three generations of your family attended, you should be good. Don't worry about the 85%. It's still a good score and Andover puts academic progression before how you are standing now. Like, how will you do if you continue your education at Andover.
