<p>Son (white male) is a junior in very good public h.s. in MA. He has a 4.7 weighted GPA (7.0 basis) which, I hear, translates to about a 3.13 on a 4.0 scale. 3/4 of his classes have been advanced (honors) and will take 3 APs next year (Stats, Latin, Bio). School does not rank.</p>

<p>SATs: 700M, 620CR, 520W (taking again in June)</p>

<p>ECs: President of Latin Club; Varsity Golf and Crew; Amnesty Intl; American Field Service; Student Council; Peer Mediation; National Latin Exam awards. Has volunteered with American Cancer Society. Will work at law firm this summer.</p>

<p>Will not be applying for financial aid.</p>

<p>Can you tell me his chances at the following schools:</p>

<p>very good chances...i suggest doing Habitat for Humanity, (just maybe for a week or so), this coming summer, colleges really like it. just make sure he maintains his grades.</p>

<p>Thanks . . . I think?! You think he's got a good chance at all those schools I listed? Remember, that 4.7 weighted GPA translates to a 3.13 on a 4.0 scale. Thanks for the recommendation of doing volunteer work -- he needs to work on that.</p>

<p>A 3.13 is not a bad gpa, but I think it will put him out of the running for several of these schools....</p>

<p>I know all of these except for Bentley. I know Penn State (UP)'s admission standards particularly well since I go there. The problem your son will face there is that the admission decision is 2/3 gpa, and the average gpa for incoming freshmen is around a 3.7. He may be able to get into one of Penn State's branch campus, for instance Altoona. Best of luck.</p>

<p>No offense at all to Penn State or UMaryland, but wouldn't someone with a 3.7GPA be looking more towards an Ivy-type school?? What in the world GPA do the Ivies want?</p>

<p>Ok, it is 3.5-3.6. I just went by my grades and the people I had spoken with here. </p>

<p>Ivies want the above 4.0 students with the great SATs that are really involved in the community. For example, the average gpa for incoming freshmen at Stanford is a 4.0-4.3. </p>

<p>I know that Stanford is not ivy league, but it is ivy league caliber.</p>

<p>He still may very well get in at of his choices. I hope that he gets into Penn State UP. I wasn't trying to be discouraging. It was just the feeling I got when looking over his stuff. The college admission people are very hard to figure out.</p>

<p>Myone: a 4.7/7.0 = .6714 X 4.0 = 2.69 GPA if your numbers are correct. Better recheck. Has he come up with some safeties? Ivies generally require GREAT stats, scores, ECs, comm. service, Eagle scout, etc. Good luck to your son as you start this arduous journey!</p>

<p>I got into Bentley with similar GPA but higher SAT's. I got scholarship based on extra curriculars and tons of leaadership. Good luck!</p>

<p>BTW, I notice you have posted your s's stats many places. Each school has it's own board under the "Colleges" forum. Each school will have a thread that basically says "Stats of those admitted/rejected of class of 2012". Those threads are a Godsend if you want to look at any school. You might have a better idea than just random kids/parents posting what they think. Of course, the boards are just a microcosm of kids that get in. But check out those threads, they are very insightful!</p>
