I'm in state but I'm not top 10%... I'm top 15%, could possible go up to 11 or 12% by next Dec (weak freshmen year killed me. Now I have A+ in all my classes, taking all honors/APs)

SAT 2050 (possibly retaking)
ACT 33 (retaking)

GPA: 98.1

ECs:

Very active in band, (President, will be section leader next year, went to All-State this year). My band is extremely successful, State Marching Champs and State Honor band twice.

Community Service Coordinator for student council, NHS member, vice president of Students Against Drunk Driving.

AP:

5 on World History last year. Will take Chem, US, and English this year.

I would really love to go to UT, do I have a chance?

SAT scores aren't bad. With an 11%-12% rank you will have a good shot. Your ECs look good but not great. I don't think that being in a good band will help you, just if your accomplishments as an individual have been good. The ECs look to be a solid 5/6. If your essays can also be a 5/6 you should have a strong shot. HOWEVER, it's been getting more and more difficult, so UT should be seen as a reach school for anyone who isn't in the top ten of a Texas HS. It's like Harvard admissions: they have probably 4 qualified kids for every non-top ten spot available.

How highly is your school weighting courses that a 98 isn't in the top 10%? I have a 95.47 (down from 100.5 after I quit trying 2 years ago) and that's top 7%.

I don't know the weighting system... but my school is extraordinarily competitive. To be in the top 10% I need a 99.4.

That's quite high. Do most kids average 99-100 in their classes or are they receiving a large ammount of bonus points? Because otherwise your school has the highest grade inflation in world history!

Well it's possible to have over a 100 average because of weighted classes... I think the top 10 students in my class start with a 101.2 average.

unfortunately UT could care less if you go to the most amazing high school in the world. If your not top ten percent, you are in the same pool as every other non top ten percenter in Texas. But your SAT is decent (which is a large factor). If you can get your rank up a bit, that would be incredibly beneficial. Otherwise, you just have to wait and see but I think that at worst you will have to do summer school. I know people with worse stats that have gotten in non top ten percent, but you never know.
