I have a 3.2 GPA. Although I don't know if this matters but I go to The Dalton School. Does coming from a New York private school hurt my chances? I got a 2.78 Freshman year and I have gotten better and better each year.

I got a 30 on the ACT. I took 1 SAT II (Chemistry) and got a 710. I plan on taking Math 2C I expect something like a 750 on that.

I have a good amount of ECs: I worked at a local synagogue, tutored kids in Harlem, worked at a non-profit thrift shop for aids research, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney's office. Deutsche Bank, School Newspaper (Staff Writer), Editor in Chief of Tiger Wire (Sports Magazine), Varsity Football and Varsity Lacrosse.

I also am an Asian American and plan on applying early. Does being from the north help?

Any response would be very helpful. Thank you.

Your SAT II's look fine, but a 30 ACT seems a little low. Have you taken the SAT?

No I plan on using the ACT

Your EC's and SAT II's are good... yeah, there's kind of a "line" for the ACT here in MO, it'd really be good if you could get at least a 31, honestly. Doubt your location will make a difference one way or the other, although make sure to visit, WashU tends to appreciate applicants showing a little interest.

i think you should raise your gpa.
3.2 is a little on the low side, unless you have like 20 APs, which i doubt (no personal offense, but just in general)

Yeah, you definitely need to get that GPA up. Other than that, looking good (though a few more points on the ACT wouldn't hurt). The SAT IIs will look good - WashU doesn't require them, but it'll give at least somewhat of an edge against those who haven't taken any of them.

My son went to a private school of similar calibre to the Dalton School and made a 3.2. He had loads of extra-curriculars, lettered in three sports, was heavily involved in student legislature, and speaks two Chinese languages (he's a white kid).

He was waitlisted at Wash U, went to GWU for a year and reapplied after making a 3.8 there. He was accepted this Feb and has enrolled for the fall.

I'd say GPA is by FAR the number one criterion colleges look at; it measures actual work, discipline, and dependability. I'd encourage you to "pull out all the stops" for your senior grades--it WILL make a difference!

GPA is not everything. It's your entire package.
I had a gpa as bad as yours during my senior year. However, my ECs were EXTREMELY strong(varsity sports, 4 years, committment to many clubs for 4 years) and my SAT/ACT were pretty high (2250/33), and I had a hook. One of my college essays won $200 in a writing contest and counselor/teacher recs were good. I went to a top public school and switched to a private school, graduated with 11 APs. But my Senior year GPA is a 4.2. Got in RD and they flew me up twice (for art weekend and MW).

However, Your SAT2s are far better than mine and your ECs are probably as strong as mine are. I'd advise to apply ED and fly in to interview on campus. I remember that the girl I saw interviewing the same day as me (parents' weekend) also was accepted because I saw her at art weekend.

@Leticia:
Well your case is exceptional, and it would definitely give you a good chance of getting in, despite a low GPA. However, I think the improvement you showed over the years in your GPA made an impact.

@Leticia: Attending multiculti week is not a big deal, considering every minority gets invited.

but I agree that to get into WashU if you really want to go here is to interview and apply ED. (I think being Asian is perhaps a disadvantage applying to most elite colleges nowadays and alot of students come from New York, New Jersey and Maryland so there are alot of people from the north/east. So no advantage. But if you want to go here, you apply ED and you're chances are good... really good. I hope you catch my drift.)

Yeah, I think they're worried about the yield rate - if you ED that's irrelevant, so showing interest isn't as important.

Although they really don't release this data, the rep who came to my school flat out said that the 'average' ACT that they accept is around a 33 (mid 50 being 32-34).

i would try to get at least a 33 on the ACT
