Chances?

I feel like I have a pretty decent shot from OOS, but I'm not sure. Just got back from a visit yesterday and was blown away.

Rising male senior at extremely competitive public HS in Maryland (the one featured in The Overachievers)

GPA: 3.78 UW/4.6 W
SAT: 1450/2150 (740 M, 710 CR, 700 W)
SAT IIs: US History 720, Math II 680 (planning on retaking Math II and also taking Physics)

APs:

US Government (5)
US History (JR year, expecting a 4)
English Language (JR year, expecting a 3 or 4)
Calc AB (SR year)
Psychology (SR year)
European History (SR year)

Senior year schedule:

AP Calc AB
AP Euro
AP Psych
Honors English 12
Honors Modern World History
Orchestra
Newspaper

Not the toughest courses I can take in many cases, but I think it's a respectable schedule especially with the time I devote to the school newspaper.

Extracurriculars:

School sports newspaper (separate from regular paper but still a great publication). Writer junior year, and managing editor (one behind Editor-in-chief) senior year.

Kept statistics for school football and basketball teams since sophomore year

Play violin in school orchestra

Other:

Done a couple sports journalism programs at American University and University of Maryland the past two summers, both taught by editors and writers at Washington Times.

Letters of Recommendation: Should get a couple okay ones from core teachers, but will definitely get a couple great ones from my newspaper advisor and a sports writer for the Washington Times.

Essays: I expect them to be good and help my application, probably not something that will singlehandedly get me in or overly impress anyone though.

You're going for journalism then?
I'm impressed by your involvement in the newspaper, I think you have as a good shot as any for getting in OOS. If you're planning to do journalism, then make sure that passion shines through on your application. UNC doesn't look at SAT II's.

lol, yeah, probably should have mentioned that I'm planning on majoring in journalism. I'm definitely going to focus on that in my essays.

anyone else?

your stats seem good to me (although you didn't share your class rank?), but you don't seem to have many extracurriculars. i don't advise that you just run out and join a ton because real commitment is important. i guess just make sure that on your application you stress your involvement with the paper and with orchestra, along with your leadership roles in both areas. make sure you apply early, and good luck because the journalism school is amazing & naturally carolina is perfect for people who love sports!

also i'm a steelers fan, too, which is pretty much why i clicked on your thread :)

Yeah, you have a great shot!!!!

leah, my school doesn't do class rank, which is to my advantage b/c my counselor guessed that I'd be in the top 25% (again, absurdly competitive school, 3 people from the class of 08 are going to Harvard). i think both my essays are going to focus on sports journalism in some way, and im gonna get some great recommendations related to that.

go steelers!

oops, just noticed my weighted GPA is a typo; should be 4.46, not 4.6
