Chances?

Hey guys, I'm a new member but I've visited Yale twice so far (the second visit was yesterday) and I'm absolutely in love. It's really up in the air between Tufts and Yale at this point, but I'm much more worried about Yales admissions. Let me know what my relative chances are:

Academics:

I got 4 B's in the first semester of my Freshman year, but ever since then I've gotten straight A's and I've taken a total of 4 AP classes (World History, US History, Calculus BC, and English Language) and gotten 5's on all the exams. I plan to take 4 more next year (Physics, Statistics, Art History, and English Lit) and don't anticipate I'll have a hard time getting A's. I'm also taking Madrigals (the advanced choir), Drama 3, and Intermediate Dance.

I got a 2300 on the SAT (800 Math, 760 Writing, 740 Reading) and a 770 on the World History SAT II. I'm taking the Math II SAT II in October or November, and math is my strongest subject so no worries there.

Extra-Curriculars:

Theatre. I've been in 6 shows so far, including my school's sketch comedy show which I helped to write, and had the lead role in our most recent production of "How to Succeed..." I was also cast as the lead in next year's "Moon Over Buffalo."

This will be my second year in Madrigals, and I'm a frequent tenor soloist. Other laundry list facts are: president of Human Relations Council, president of Animal Rights Club, VP of Publicity for Drama Council, member of National Honors Society, Who's Who of American High School Students 2006, member of Student Senate 2006, member of the Student Leadership team, and a member of Cappies, a student theater critics' team.

Awards:

Winner of the E.I. Moore Award Junior Year (faculty votes on their favorite student for each year). Winner of the MACYs Outstanding Performance (county-wide) for "How to Succeed..." Winner of the CdM Vaudevillian Award (school-wide) for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for "How to Succeed..."

The majority of my school's awards are presented to graduating seniors, long after apps are due, so this area won't be as full.

Community Service:

The club that I lead, Human Relations Council, is a service and awareness-based club that has been involved in projects such as: Spirit of Giving week, the "What Do You See?" student forum (which I also emceed), Chapman's Ethic Institute program, Academic Integrity Week, and presentations at Appreciating Diversity Week. I'm also a school representative for the Orange County Human Relations Associates Program.

And yeah, that's about it. :)

Your chances are solid.

Work on crafting a hook for admissions.

It seems fishy that math is your best subject, yet you have no math awards nor participation in a math club.

Best of luck.

Well, math is my best academic subject in that it comes the most naturally, but I'm not fond of it at all. My strongest skill is writing, so I think that's really going to be beneficial for the essays.

Nothing is "fishy" about the math thing -- they don't care if you have a variety of talents/interests that don't align perfectly. I like your profile aside from the the freshman year first semester B's (B's are never good, but the best time for them if any is 1st semester freshman year).

You should definitely apply to Yale SCEA, NOT Tufts ED -- based on SAT score and other stats I think that Tufts would likely take you ED and then you wouldn't be able to apply to Yale. I can't really say whether Yale would accept you, but I think that there is absolutely no reason to not go for it. Moreover, Yale has a lot of theater and music stuff so your EC's fit the campus culture. As stated above, you need to work on a "hook" (and essays etc).

I've only heard of a "hook" used in conjunction with the essays...what exactly do you mean by that?
