Chances....

Okay, so I admit I used to find these chance threads very annoying and it seemed like everyone posting just wanted acknowledgment of their amazingness and were fishing for compliments, but I am so sick of waiting that I'm wondering if someone could chance me for some schools that I applied to (no Ivies!)......okay, here I go:

SAT I: 2200
GPA uw: 3.87
-I don't know rank, but I go to a competitive college prep school in St. Paul, Minnesota and have taken the most rigorous course load available and plan to take another math class this summer (which I noted in my "additional information" section).

Varsity sports:
Soccer - 4 years (all conference 3 years, captain senior year, top GPA on team - academic excellence award)
Basketball - 4 years (captain 2 years, all-conference 3 years, about 1,700 pts. in career - all-time leading scorer @ my school)
Track -4 years, various awards, all-conference 2 years, hold 1600m record (but just for girls haha).

EC:
Math Club (club leader 11, 12)
Science Club (leader 11, 12)
MOSAIC Diversity Club (leader 11,12)
Environmental Club (Leader 11,12)
Amnesty International
Tutors' Guild

300+ hours of community service (including service trips to Mexico and Tanzania, wrote about Tanzania for CommonApp essay)
-various projects on my reservation; raise money and awareness at my school

Jobs:
US Soccer certified referee - grade 8 (since 10th grade)
job at German Christmas store since beginning of 11th grade

Essays:
I really liked all of them. As I said, main one is about what I learned in Tanzania.
IV: my math teacher in 10th grade (who is now part of the Peace Corps in Tanzania)
Roommate: About MOSAIC and my being Native American and what I have learned from both and how I have shared this at my school.
Why Stanford?: I love this one...I felt like it was personal, but also showed that I had seriously researched Stanford and discovered it as a perfect fit.
<--If you want to read any of these, just PM me and give me some feedback.

Other Factors:
American Indian and quite involved with my tribe. I've spoken with Stanford's "liaison" to Native applicants quite a bit, developed a quite good relationship, I don't know if this helps at all, but I'm pretty sure she is on the adcom.

Chance me for these schools please:
-Washington University in St. Louis
-Duke
-Northwestern
-Vanderbilt
-Stanford University (top choice!)

Stanford and WU are my top choices for sure. Also, do you think I have any chances at getting invites to any of these schools "multicultural weekends" or a likely letter? I dunno.....any input is appreciated! Wado!

What do you guys think? And, honestly, I am not trying to fish for compliments, I'm just very anxious! Thanks for reading this and good luck to all!!

-Washington University in St. Louis -High Match
-Duke -High Match/Low Reach
-Northwestern -Match
-Vanderbilt -Match
-Stanford University -Reach

Do you go to Hill or Cretin?

RonPaul: Thanks for the input! But, nah, I go to Mounds Park; are you from the Twin Cities as well? Also, why are Duke and WUSTL "high matches" while NU and Vandy are "matches"? Is there any reason for the difference? Sorry, I'm new to this.

Also, I don't know if this is indicative, but I've been accepted at 7 of 7 schools so far (again, I'm not meaning to brag, but I'm just very pleased, haha)! Many are sort of "safeties" and none are as "competive" as any I listed above, but some are relatively selective, namely UW-Seattle (early acceptance), UW-Madison, and St. Olaf (early acceptance and finalist for the largest scholarship). Do you think this means anything? I obviously know all of these schools are very selective, but I dunno.....

Now do it on a 1-10 scale. haha. I just copied someone on the other page.

I have to admit, I think being Native American will help a great deal. Stanford's a reach for anyone, and the rest of them are high match/low reach, if I had to guess. But being a URM helps a lot at private schools, so maybe better than that even.

-Washington University in St. Louis - Match
-Duke - Match-High Match
-Northwestern - Match
-Vanderbilt - Low Match
-Stanford University (top choice!) - Reach, will be for everyone =(

as previously stated, Stanford is a reach to anybody. I have a good friend who graduated last year, 5.2ish weighted GPA, 2 sport athlete, salutatorian, NHS, all that jazz and didn't get in. I am not saying this to discourage you in any way, so please do not take it that way. I just say it to emphasize the competitiveness of the University.

You are a Native American, which will help A LOT!!! Your EC's are really strong, as well as your academics/test scores. Colleges will like your commitment to your sports, as well as your accomplishments in those sports. I think you have an excellent shot, and I wish you all the luck!

If it isn't too much trouble, I would greatly appreciate it if you could chance me (I'm rather anxious too =P): http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/658729-chances-out-state-student-uc.html

Yeah, I know that Stanford is a reach for everyone, but thanks for the input nonetheless. However, I have another question regarding my application to Stanford.....I was put in contact with Stanford's "liaison" to Native applicants in the fall and have been communicating/conversing with this lady ever since. I'd like to say we have developed a bit of a relationship (albeit via e-mail) and she even said something along the lines of "thanks for the very nice note ______, we really appreciate it and I want you to know that the little effort that you put in went a long way" (this was in regard to a note that a sent along with my "Native application follow-up" (which basically allowed us to expand on our heritage). Do you think this means anything? Ah, I so hope to get an acceptance (and sooN)! hehe.

Also, I'm curious, why do many people consider Duke a "match-high match" for me while Vandy and NU "matches".....historically, isn't Duke more "competitive" in their admissions process? Again, I am just curious.

Those conversations with the liaison sound very promising. It sounds like nothing negative is coming out of them, but keep it real.

Right now we are all stuck in the "Wait and See" game, which will last another 2-4 weeks =(

I use high match to mean matches that are closer to being reaches rather than very-match.

And hahaha, I just saw "about 1,700 pts. in career" and thought it was under "soccer"...

Holy crap...

She'd be on the U.S. women's team if it were for soccer

Lol, yeah, not soccer, I only wish. Okay, now I understand what your terminology means, thanks. Also, do you think the fact that I have visited WashU and had 2 interviews while on campus (one with student, one with professor) will help me at all in the process? I know they care about demonstrating interest, but I just don't know how much.

Any more opinions people?

Blah blah blah?

-Washington University in St. Louis---low reach
-Duke-----------------mid reach
-Northwestern----------low reach
-Vanderbilt----------------low reach
-Stanford University (top choice!) ----high reach

I think most of you guys are either missing the fact that this person is Native American are you are not aware of how much being a URM makes a difference. That is a MASSIVE help in the admissions process... especially because you are the least-represented URM of all the URMs at top universities/colleges. Bringing a Native American into any college/university would help to diversify their student body, which is, in 99% of cases, ideal.

That said, I think you have great chances at all the schools you mentioned. I honestly think you will get into all the schools on your list (maybe, maybe not Stanford, but you have a better chance than many people I've seen who have applied to Stanford - I truly think you'll get in here).

washu - slight reach
duke - slight reach to reach
northwestern - slight reach
vanderbilt - match
stanford - reach

but then again being native american helps a lot like the guy said above lol

chance me back? :D
