Chances...

Asian american (Bangladeshi) Expected major is chemistry. I am currently a sophomore in high school. I go to a medium sized school in KS, not really competitive or anything. Our school offers only 5 AP classes, but I'm taking all of them at some point. I'll list my stats below.

SAT: 730 critical reading, 730 math, 770 writing
ACT: Hoping for 33 this year
GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.385 W
Rank: 1/~200
EC's: 100 hours at local Salvation Army, 2 summers volunteering at the hospital, Key Club, Math Club, Scholars' Bowl (Captain and member of 2005 State Championship team), 4 year varsity tennis player, Philosophy Club, Co-founder of Historical Film Society, Member of library youth advisory committee, Spanish Club, National Honor Society (President)
Awards: 3rd in state Spanish I, 1st in state Spanish II, High scorer in Kansas on AMC 12, Member of 2005 State Scholars' Bowl Champion team, Numerous 1st place finishes in local math competitions

Expecting good essay and excellent teacher reccommendations.

bump...bump...

You probably have a 75% chance mainly because you come from another state and are not given priority.

Your grades scores and EC's are definitely above average for a Berkeley applicant, but there's nothing spectacular. And there could be a couple contradictions on your apps. How can you win in so many math competitions if your SAT I math is relatively low?

bump...bump...bump...bump...

I think you have a good chance. Just go for it!

Teacher recs will count for nil with UC admissions.

bump.............

You're already club president and captain of some clubs... four year varsity tennis player? I thought you said you were a sophomore... Something doesn't add up.

TTG

There do appear to be some contradictions in your application, like the 730 math score, yet winning multiple math competitions.

To what schools were kids from your school accepted? Rejected? If you look at kids with similar stats and situations, you can get an indication of your chances. If nobody from your school is getting into "elite" institutions, and they have similar stats, then your chances are iffy at best. If a few people from your school go to the most widely regarded schools every year, then you have a decent chance. On the UC app, you will only be able to list so many activities. Also, make sure that the clubs in which you are involved actually do things, because the application will ask for hours spent per week and weeks spent per year, in addition to a description of the activities.

It seems like you do a lot, but do your activities have depth, or do they just sound impressive? Does the philosophy club read famous texts and disect them with a teacher, or do you just sit around and talk? There is a lot of possibility, and i forget the number of spots available for awards and activities, but if you ask, someone else can tell you. Also, try to do something Chemistry related, ESPECIALLY if you are applying to the college of chemistry. Excellent math and science scores are also common components of applicants for chem in the college of chem, so perhaps getting near perfect scores on the physics SAT II might help. Basically, the better the scores, the better your chances, particularly SAT II, and exceptional and extremely broad ECs help, espcially if they relate to a major to which you're applying a special college (Engineering, chemistry, environmental and resources, ect), but if your high school doesn't place well, then there is little that you can do.
