Asian american (Bangladeshi) Expected major is chemistry. I am currently a sophomore in high school. I go to a medium sized school in KS, not really competitive or anything. Our school offers only 5 AP classes, but I'm taking all of them at some point. I'll list my stats below.

Expecting good essay and excellent teacher reccommendations.

"Expecting good essay[s] and excellent teacher recommendations."

a little conceited aren't we.

99% of the students at my school are idiots.

You don't need teacher recommendations for UC's

you have pretty good stats, extracurriculars, and all that jazz, but keep in mind that even with stellar stats, chances are still up in the air. I had a lot of topnotch friends at my school who got better stats than i did, but did not get into UCLA. As for your extracurriculars, try to concentrate on a particular EC that you are genuinely passionate about. I didn't get stellar stats or grades, but I wrote in my personal statement about my passion, and I only participated in two community service organizations that had to do with my passion. Keep this in mind: "Quality over Quantity."

Looks like with those stats you are officially going to get into community college......CCCC (college confidential community college, that is....I heard it is pretty tough)

rickpaul80,

it is too early to tell your chances. UC's only consider grades from your sophomore and junior year. since you've only completed your sophomore year, we only have half the info necessary to evaluate your chances at the UC's.

everything else looks good even for out-of-state, but re-post again when you've finished your junior year. that'll help us better gauge your standing.

i dont get how you've played 4 YEARS OF VARSITY TENNIS if you're only a sophomore though. middle school accomplishments don't count (for any college app).

finally, UC's don't require letters of rec.

Wait, so they don't look at senior grades?

they do, but it's after they've accepted you that they require you to send in your completed high school transcript. in this case...your senior grades do matter in the sense that they can still revoke your admission if you get a D / F in any senior classes...

rickpaul, your in as long as you maintain your grades. I really dont see how they could reject you.

How are you a 4 year Varsity tennis player if you're in 10th grade?

What ever happened to enjoying the high school years? It seems that teenageers are so concerned with college applications and exceling in EVERYTHING that they do that it consumes their life. Some things can not be learned in a textbook and can only be aquired through social interaction with people. Enjoy what you do and sucess is just an added bonus. Remember that it is okay to be mediocre at some things and experiencing failure is inevitable -- it will remind you to stay humble. Try to be well rounded in all aspects of your life.

TritonBruin: Very well said.

^ men bruin. I was really never concerned about college until end of junior year...the year i came to CC. Before that, I worked hard, followed my passsions, and just had FUN. seriously, this college admission frenzy is getting out of hand

Yes, very out of hand. I ask a lot of people why they participate in Key Club, NHS, Mock Trial, and all of these other extracurriculars, and their only reason is because of college. Whatever happened to participating in extracurriculars for the sake of genuine passion and interest for it?

Speaking of which, on the UC application, you're only limited to I think 5 spots to fill in your EC's. So don't waste your time on so many clubs/EC's. Again, my advice is to concentrate on a select few to show the UC admissions your dedication, commitment, and effort towards that particular EC activity.

I think the UCLA adcoms can see right through an applicant who does EC's just for college admissions.... or at least it seems to be the case. The vast majority of students that I've met at UCLA are involved in at least something on campus, whether that be IM sports, clubs, music, service, competition groups, etc.

Heh... I know how you feel, sort of.

bump........................

see kfc4u has a point. Lets say somebody has 10 hours of community service and sees it was in junior and senior year....dey know that the person got desparate and started to get hours like crazy. however...if a person started volunteering at say freshman yuear and did a lot..dats dedication and passion to help ppl. That's the ppl they want..people who follow their passion, not those who in the final 2 years of high schools go nuts over ec's and volunteering
