Is an overrepresented minority though

Honestly, for an Asian kid (I assume that’s what you meant by overrepresented minority) with a sub 2100 SAT from New York, it’ll be fairly difficult, if not impossible to get into Harvard, Yale, MIT. In the interest of promoting diversity, these schools do not accept an equal ratio of applicants from overpopulated states (read: New York,) and Asians are, of course, overrepresented at the high end schools. I’m not sure if it will, but it might also hurt that he/she will likely need financial aid.

these chance threads really won’t help. i know kids that have gotten 1800s-1900s on their SATs and have ended up in Stanford and Yale. Even though some may say its unlikely for you to get into Harvard, i don’t think so. If your essay shows your passion, it may do the trick.

like desi chick said, you never know if you’ll actually get in.

But if you are looking for probability given demographics of admitted students, you are probably on the low end (SATs, overrep minor). Do you have anything in particular that you feel is unique as far as ECs and awards? Those often distinguish the great candidates from good ones, besides the essays.

it doesn’t mean you can’t get in at all or anything like that AT ALL, but it will be quite difficult.
