Chances

Hey guys. I am extremely interested in attending the Smith School of Business and perhaps do a double major in gov't and politics.
Do you guys think I will be able to get in with the following stats and accolades:

3.65 uw G.P.A, 4.07 W G.P.A

as of right now 2050 SAT score, (1360 reading/math combined)..... i am going to give it one more shot in october.

I have to take my SAT II's in november, but University of Maryland does not require SAT II's right? If people could please get back to me, it would be appreciated. Thanks!

Before can answer, are you OOS or IS? second do you have a strong ec resume or is your resume just going to be I’m a strong academic student.

I would say you are a very strong contender for Smith, and/or scholars govt and politics, but unless you have a ton of ECS, I would say no to Honors.

im OOS and thanks for the reply really appreciate it.

My EC’s include
National Honor Society
Phi Alpha Theta (History Honor Society)

Clubs: Junior Statesmen of America, American Red Cross club, and FBLA

They will be looking for leadership positions.

Right now assuming they are not leadership I would say yes to scholars govt and politics, probably yes for Smith, no to Honors.

DS had 1390 on SAT (M & V), 2160 Overall. Equivalent ECs, and more including NYLF, Who’s Who, plus lifeguard, Habitat for Humanity and Athletics is in Scholars.

They really do look for the well rounded student.

S is interested in U-MD (instate). v. interested in music w/most EC being music classes, groups, etc. v. strong in the humanities fields but math and science, not so much. this thread suggests the admissions only looks or weights more heavily math and science; what about a kid who is in humanities? thanks. SAT 1860, ~3 UW

xxx, my incoming freshman D was much more of a humanities kid than her sister. She’s in the scholars program, and received merit awards, both from the school, as well as her specific college. Your son’s SAT and GPA are on the lower end of chances for some of the special programs (scholars, etc.), but especially being in state, I think he’ll have a good chance at UMD. What kids of AP classes has he taken? If he’s taken several of the humanities AP-type classes, that will also help him. Also, if there’s any chance he can retake the SAT in October and improve his CR and M scores, that will also be a big help.

I don’t know what kind of music he’s into, but we’ve been impressed with the band, music-theater, and various singing groups that we’ve seen on campus. They bring in some really talented kids.

It really has to come down to what his intended major is. This particular poster wanted to know about their chances for Smith. Smith is ranked by USNWR as 18 internationally, it is incredibly competitive. You can not expect UMD to rank a theatre, music, or arts major at the same level for SATs as a student applying to Smith. Two different balls of wax.

Students applying for engineering need a strong Math and Science background, while the student applying for Fashion Merchandising as their intended major does not. This is why I get perturbed when people say my friend or sibling got in with a lower gpa or SAT. This may be true, but the whole picture needs to be placed into the answer. Was your friend IS, was your friend applying for the same intended major, did your friend have a hook (moved here at 10 yrs old from Russia), are they a minority, are they a legacy, did they check the gemstone box? If they are OOS what state, NY/NJ is much more competitive than ALASKA and UMD wants diversity. Do they have a low GPA, because they work a part time job 20 hours a week, captain of the sports team and hold a position on the student council?

Look at the entire picture 1860 and 3.0 uw for humanities is not something to worry about. Worry if they have no musical ecs, like district or 1st chair.
