Hi,
I'm a senior as of this coming fall, and planning on applying to Columbia. I go to Roxbury Latin, and have a B+ish GPA. RL is a very hard school, so I think that that might actually be pretty good. I'm pretty high in my class of 50, but not top 10, more like top 15 or 20. The kids there are really smart though.
I have 4 APs, a 5 in Stat, a 5 in French Language, a 5 in English Lit and a 4 in US History.
My SATs are 800 CR, 780 Math, 730 writing.
I have 4 SAT IIs- 730 Latin, 760 French, 750 US History, 660 Physics.
I have a lot of ECs, which I am really serious about
Piano- Practice 3 or so hours a day, 2 lessons a week all year. I'm very serious and good at it.
Photography- have taken college classes at AIB, SMFA
Animation- teach a class in it at a art museum, have done so for many years,
Debate/Speech/MUN- on MUN executive committee, do a lot of debates.
Sailing- my only real sport (a real hole in my resume). Have done well in some regattas, teach at my yacht club
Glee Club- sing in it, also accompany it. I'm going to try for the more prestigious group this year.
Publications- work on them, submit photos

Lastly, I'm a white male, which sucks nowadays, but my dad did get his PHD at Columbia

If I could have some idea of how I look for Columbia, I'd really appreciate it.

Unless your dad attended Columbia for undergrad, it’s not going to help you.
You have the grades and the test scores.

Do you have anything that is truly unique and that sets you apart from the thousands of students that have the same/better grades and test scores? You have to ask yourself that.

You have to get accepted into Juliliard first in order to apply to Columbia College for the joint program. I was thinking of doing that for viola but from what I’ve heard, it’s nearly impossible to perform both academically and musically at such a competitive level.

Overall it’s more like a lottery than not to get into an Ivy these days. Ivies reject 90% of applicants. Your school’s rigor (you have very high SATs and you’re sort of middle of the pack in grades) will help you.

That being said . . .

1) Your CR and Math SATs are in the top 25% of recent admits.
2) For all 3 SAT scores together are barely in the top 25% of recent admits.
3) GO FOR IT . .and love thy safeties
4) If you really love Columbia go early decision -see data below

Good luck!

Hey servius, I live in Mass and I’m actually very familiar with RL…I have two really good friends that go to Winsor. Your SAT is great, especially because you have a 1580/1600…writing is the least important section. Also, I am well aware that a B+ GPA at a school like RL or Winsor is really good. I took a summer class at Belmont Hill lol and they were not too fond of RL kids, but I know that the school is both ridiculously hard to get into and even more difficult to excel once accepted. You seem to have done both! Your class rank is quite good…now I have a question about your ECs. Do you play piano 3 hours a day ON TOP OF the lessons, or are your lessons twice a week for three hours? If you play for three hours a day, that’s ridiculous…but I commend you on it!
