how to do my chances look for getting into emory...

sats:
700 math
630 writing (should go up.. hoping for 700)
590 cr (i know.. my weakest area, this should also go up though)

sat IIs -- math IC 710, writing 680

gpa... around 4.2

i have a fairly good amt. of ec's, and they show that i'm pretty well rounded... (range from cheerleading to lacrosse to student council to dance....) and i've held leadership positions in a bunch of them.

so what do you think??

Your guess is as good as mine, collegehelp1729. I was wondering the same thing about myself, hopefully there's someone here who knows what's good enough.

Yeah, I'm already looking into transferring before the school year starts, of course I'll give UD a chance, but my parents made me go there instead of McGill since it was closer and yeah, I'm not thrilled. Anyway, my main reason for wanting to go to Emory is b/c it's close to the Center For Disease Control which is where I want to work and hopefully there'd be opportunity for internships. But transferring's competitive, and I want to know if it's just going to be a waste of money or not.

STATS:
Salutatorian of High School class of around 350
Never was told final GPA, but lots of APs/Honors, almost straight As
*Grand Champion of school science fair, Reserve Grand Champion of county science fair, participant in International Science Fair
*SATs sucked--Math:680, Verbal:650
*SAT IIs sucked as well (noticing a trend?)--Math II-620, Writing--710, Chem--570 (ouch, *??? chem major too...best subject in school...)
*NHS, school newspaper editor, dog training (try not to laugh, people), lab assistant @ school, volunteer @ nursing home, musical, speech and debate, piano lessons/perform a few times a year for some club...hmm that's about it

So..assuming I can write decent essays and get a very good GPA at UD...what do you think?

do high school accomplishments even matter anymore when transferring? yours are great though

My son is also interested in epidemiology and the CDC. Someone recently told me that is it possible to do a summer internship there, whether or not you get into Emory. I haven't followed up on this tip to see if that information is correct, but wanted to pass it along.

I really don't know about the exact qualifications you need to get into Emory. I went there for a master's degree many years ago, and my S would now like to apply there so we are battling with the same question. He also has a very high gpa and ranking, but slightly lower SAT scores.

However, just to be safe, would you ever consider a back-up application to Oxford College? I spoke with the admissions people at Emory, and they indicated there was no problem applying to both Emory and Oxford at the same time. After you spend two years at Oxford, you automatically move to the Emory campus. It's kind of a built-in back-up or safety school.

Yes, Cami, I am so glad you brought that up about Oxford. Is it OKAY to go to Oxford for your first two years?

OK? ...... I don't see why not from an academic perspective. You do a decent job and you're guaranteed admission to Emory. They take students with considerably lower test scores and grades than the main campus, so it could be an important boost.

The question is would you (or whoever is applying) be happy there for two years. It's a very small campus, I believe. Isn't it in a rural area? Someone told me they have lots of groups on campus to keep everyone occupied.

I think it would be fairly important to have a look at the place before you made a commitment. But it is one way to get into a top tier school with substantially lower grades and scores. You just have to "prove yourself" once you get to Oxford. If you can get straight into Emory great...but if not give Oxford a try.

collegehelp1729,

You should apply ed if you really emory. You should also think about bringing up your SAT scores. I think that you have a moderate chance at admission.

If I would end up transferring to Oxford, would I still have to go 2 yrs there before Emory or just one assuming all my credits transferred? I'd still really like to go to main campus right away, but this is a more doable option that I didn't even know about...I wish I had before submitting college apps last year.

oxford is really really small so there won't be much of a social life if that is what you are looking for...but that doesn't mean it isn't good...many of the recent top of the class students attended oxford first and the grading system is def. harder (aka grade deflation). But if you dont get into emory and you really want to go there then Oxford is a good decision.

Oxford is a very different environment both socially and academically than Emory and I would check it our carefully and definitely visit.
