i’m applying ED to amherst, but everyone tells me that i don’t have a chance in hell getting in since i didn’t take the SAT IIs. my grades aren’t very good (well, they’re not as good as the amherst standard - i have a 3.1 GPA and i got a 1900 on the SAT).
do you think they’ll take into account that i would absolutely love to go there and it’s my top choice?
i have many national awards for playwriting, including a professional production that was done in LA earlier this year, and my extra-curriculars (mostly for theatre, but some other things too) are really amazing - but i know all that comes second to an academically based school like amherst.
what do you think?? please be honest, i need a reality check here.

As for the SAT IIs, that is a requirement, so I do think not having them will be an obstacle. If you really want to apply, you could take two at the Oct or Nov test date and they would be in time for ED decisions.

Your GPA and SAT score are under the normal standard for Amherst. That doesn’t mean admission is impossible, but it’s probably not terribly likely. However, if your ECs are really compelling, along with your essays and teacher recs… then who knows. You won’t know if you don’t try. In your case, I’d definitely apply ED, though, since it’s a time when they can spend a bit more time reviewing an application.

I don’t think the fact that it’s your top choice will get you any mileage. In ED it’s every applicant’s top choice. Your best bet is in highlighting your writing, in my opinion.

Good luck!

Don’t forget you could also take the ACT with Writing in lieu of the SAT/SATII’s.

In admitting students of promise, Amherst chiefly considers most recent academic performance alongside success in standardized testing. However, fortunately for you, Amherst also cares most about creating a diverse class, and if you’ve accomplished something that distinguishes you as an outstanding person, you are highly competitive for Amherst.
