I think the weakness on your app is only 2 AP’s and only 9 honors, but your SAT’s are good. I say that is a weakness because most kids will have many more APs and a lot more honors. For example, my son had 4 AP’s and 5 jump start classes. All of his classes when offered were honors.

I think you have a shot, but not for any LEP., the weighted gpa is too low.

“Im asking for chances because i know Maryland is trying to avoid NJ students”

heh?? and you know this how?? and why would this make any sense?

Admission stats from our top 25 NJ HS have not changed for UMaryland for the past 5 years…

bulletandpima: it is highly possible that the OP attends a NJ high school where one must “qualify” for honors and AP’s and cannot just “stroll in” to AP’s and honors classes as in other states…in our NJ public, 2 AP’s and 9 honors would be considered as “rigorous” (just below "most rigorous)…given the requirements for entrance…

That is true it could be their system, after having moved 12 times in 20 yrs, and my kids attending schools in 5 states, I look at it differently. For example in our 1st VA hs, you were tracked your freshman yr, so there were no honor classes, it was when you got into 11th grade that you had an ability to take APs. They had no honors. In our NC school, you could take std, or honors, could not take AP until you completed the honor course, except for Eng and History. In our current VA hs, you could go into ICSCE and in your 11th grade that converts over to the IB or AP program…all of your courses would be AP or IB, except for gym and foreign language. So you are correct every school system is different.

As far as UMD wanting to take less NJ students, even UMD has stated that they want to start diversifying to a national level like UVA. There was an article or a news story about this last spring when they were discussing their applications for last yr. The admission stats from the top 25 NJ HS may not have changed, what might have changed is the acceptance rate from the lower tier hs, thus, the numbers overall have changed.

20 yrs ago UMD was seen as a safety school if you were from NJ. It is not that way anymore.

haha, yup I see your point…20 years ago there were alot of safety schools if you were from NJ!!

Well, if this is the case, and UMD is trying to reduce NJ students, wonder where they’ll end up at that level? I’m sure some other state school would be more than happy to get that OOS tuition…

I am sure too, but I think at least what I have seen over the course of 2 yrs here, there are alot more students coming from across the nation. DS lives with 6 guys. 2 come from MD, 1 from NJ, 1 from Seattle, 1 from Chicago, 1 from DE and him originally from NC, now VA. This is his soph yr. so they chose their roommates. So I am not sure they will have a problem.

Even on this site, there are parents that are from Canada, CA, WA, NC and TX.

My Mom still lives in NJ, in an adult community, and every yr they come to her and ask her advice on how her gson got in. She than calls me to ask a specific question (I always say Mom I am not on the admissions board :p) She said that ly she only knew of 1 grandparent whose gchild got in, and 1 that got spring, the rest were denied.

All of this put together makes me believe that UMD is truly trying to change their image as the OOS State University of NJ

bulletandpima: hahaha Greenbriar? only there would they talk about grandchildren’s college admissions; tell your mom that an ipod at the pool does the trick…

I have a feeling that UDel has taken over as the OOS State U of NJ…

Greenbriar in Marlboro ??? Right down the road from us. From what I recall in recent years, many kids from around here ( Central NJ ) end up at UDel and Penn State. Somewhat less at UMd. Could be personal choice…or it could be less admitted to UMd.

Greenbriar at Whittingham is hers, and she’s not a pool person except for her daily water aerobics, so there is no escape. I actually was at her house last fall one weekend and a friend of a friend called her to ask about UMD, and she handed the phone to me.

I do agree many now end up at UDel, and I think it is because UDel is now the safety OOS. Penn State has always had a Jersey draw, but many kids don’t like it unless they get into College Station which is rare, so that is why they want UMD. Historically, most NJ kids come from very large hs, and they are not intimidated by the size of MD, they enjoy that large feeling, and the bball, football and fraternities. It is also a more desirable college campus than Rutgers, which is why Rutgers is usually their back up in case they don’t get into UMD, UDel or UPenn.

Here’s the funniest story about that development, Mom was at water aerobics, comes out and a gentleman speed walks after her in the parking lot…this is a man she has nver spoken to, he asks is your g’son alright? Shocked she said I think so why? He told her that over 600 students were sent back home for swine flu…Mom high tailed it home called me in a panic…I told her to stop listening to the gossip. So, obviously, in that neighborhood there are some with way too much time on their hands. Of course as a gmom, she send a goodie package the next day, in it, soup, oyster crackers, purell, and lysol wipes  with a note of just in case …oh and a check for $25 to go and get a swine flue shot. I busted out laughing, and she said it was important to get one. I reminded her he has healthcare for free and that check right now is being cashed in for other sterilizing products like alcohol. She agreed it probably was, but she still felt that she needed to at least try to convince him, because she knew I wouldn’t push it…I told her she was right, afterall, what I am going to do drive up there and force him to go with his mommy to get the shot?

I think UPitt is an overlooked school; most kids who go there seem to enjoy it.

The problem with UPitt is they actually publish how long the sun was out for the day

Yeah there is some requirement in order to take an honors or Ap course nothing big. My courseload would be called rigiorous and i am at a magnet high school. My gpa is a rising trend so hopefully that will help. My major would be business so could i get some more feedback?
