Chances

I plan on applying to Michigan and I was wondering what you guys think my chances are

White Male
Jewish - not sure if that counts for anything at Michigan

I got to a school that is only 4 years old but already one of the best schools in Howard County, Maryland, one of the top public schooling counties in America.

My unweighted GPA is 3.58 while my weighted is 4.33 (more on that later)
Class rank is 58/308 (18.1%)

SATS:
Reading: 730
Math: 710
Writing: 690
Total: 2130

SAT2's:
Chemistry: 740
Math 2: 710
Physics: 740

AP's:
Government: 4
Calculus AB: 5
English Lang: 4
Economics: 4
Chemistry: 3
Physics C: Mechanics: 3
Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism: 3

This year's AP classes:
English Lit
Biology
Calculus C
Statisics

Other classes worth noting:
Taken 3 years of honors level Spanish
took a summer test for software applications credit
took a priniciples of business class
taken every single science class offered in my school except for Environmental AP

ECs:
Have volunteered weekly at my Hebrew School
Worked as an umpire for now 5 years
Run cross country for 3 years
Played one year of football
2 years of track
Future Business Leaders of America
Science Olympiad Team
Spanish Club
One year of Lacrosse

Honors:
AP Scholar with distinction
National Honor Society
Science National Honor Society
2nd Place in state level science Olympiad competition
Honor Roll Every Quarter

Recs: My guidance counselor was also a coach who liked me because I didn't cause any trouble and worked hard
Also my calculus teacher who liked me and will probably write a fairly generic rec

Essay: Have been working on with my English teacher over the last 2 months

Conclusion: I guess the real question here is does a mediocore class rank and GPA overshadow taking 11 AP classes and a few other honors classes (only 2 non weighted classes, one being gym)

Thanks for anyone who responds to this
Also if you could suggest any other colleges I should think about applying to that would be fantastic.

I’d say a slight reach based on my own experiences. Taking difficult classes is very important, but keeping a good GPA is as well, and a 3.58 is pretty low for an OOS applicant. I’ve gone to a math and science magnet school for half a day everyday starting Freshman year where all courses are considered more rigorous than AP. A 3.58 from my school would most likely get in (in-state btw), but it’s really pushing it.

Also I would be applying to the engineering school but I was wondering how getting in there compares to the other schools at Michigan

The average GPA/ACT for engineering is 3.9/31. Based on stats alone, it’s easier to get into LSA. However, based on your interests and background in math and science, it’s very possible that you could be more competitive for engineering.

I got this above info from both Jody Gore, and Katrina Williams. Katrina Williams has the final say about entry into the CoE (at least from our area), so yeah.

I personally think that Engineering doesn’t care too much about your ECs and essays (unless they tie into engineering, which will really help) and that they want students who will be successful at engineering. LSA is looking for a more “well rounded” person. This is just my opinion o_O.

Yeah engineering is harder to get into than LSA. Have you done any math/science competitions?

As for other schools, specifically in the northeast
UMD -CP
Boston U and College
JHU
Carnegie Mellon
I’d recommend TCNJ and Rutgers but you aren’t from New Jersey…

I have that Science Olympiad Competition 2nd Place but otherwise ive just taken alot of science classes
