Chances!

I from FL and at the end of my junior year I had a 3.06 UW and a 3.927 weighted(mostly honors and six APs), I took the SAT in May 2009 and I got a 1640(590 CR, 560 M, 490 W) What are the chances of me getting into UF? I recently found out that I was commended as a National Achievement scholar. I was involved in many clubs including 5000 role models and Young republicans.

Unfortunately, judging by your scholarly performance, your chances aren’t all that bright. I’ve never heard of anyone who wasn’t playing some sort of sport for the school being accepted with much less than a 3.7 unweighted (I had a 3.8 unweighted, 4.3 weighted and 630 M, 640 R, 740 W Sat scores and abundances of extracurriculars and was still rejected for the freshman admissions).

But, that’s not say that it isn’t worth a shot, because all they can say is ‘no’. I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere, though.

I wouldn’t say there are slim chances. First, there is no consideration given to unweighted GPA. If using the UF GPA calc you are at 3.93 you are in the group where 33.9% got accepted for 2009. You are very close to 4.0, but unfortunately not close enough to put you in that cateogory. At 4.0 and above, 85.1% were accepted. However, they definitely look at the extracurriculars and lots of other aspects such as course rigor and class rank with each applicant, not just GPA and test scores.

I would suggest taking the ACT if you haven’t. The writing score under 500 is the main problem with your test scores. Some state universities in Florida publish they are looking for a minimum of 500 in each subject.

There are many on this board who have gotten accepted with 25 ACTs and in the 4.0 range of GPA including my daughter, so I would definitely go for it and wish you the best of luck.

Apply, you have a chance as does everyone else.

Consider re-taking the SAT with an eye on raising the writing portion. UF superscores the test, so you have nothing to loose. Also go ahead and take the ACT-- some people do better on one than the other. You have until the end of December to get the scores to UF.

Having said that, my son was rejected last year with similar grades and a slightly better (29 ACT, didn’t take the SAT) test score. He was really light on ECs though and he didn’t have me proof the application, so no telling what the essay looked like.

Good luck – it certainly doesn’t hurt to apply!
