The reason I had such low grades Soph year and first sem Jr year was due to a near 10 month depression (reasons I will not state here but might in essays) but I had a strong comeback. If relevant, I have an IQ of about 170. I focused alot my jr year (as shown through gpa, sat, ec, etc)
I have good recs, and my essay skills are pretty strong

What I’m freaking out about is if my EC, scores, and my trend will be enough for the above colleges. I plan to be a Invesment Banking/Finance major with a minor in econ
Also considering double majoring with above and comp sci

please chance me!

Mate, with a 2400 it will be hard to find a school that will flat out reject you, even with a non-perfect UW GPA.

Trust me, you have nothing to worry about. It all depends on how you come across in your applications, write good essays and I have a hard time seeing anyone (save perhaps MIT) not accepting you.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/809189-okay-gpa-good-scores-chance-me-anyway.html

please any more?

Bumppbumpbump

bump again >.<

I think you got a good shot man. Your gpa certainly hurts you a bit, but your race, sats, ap scores, etc. I’m not good at judging ec’s at all, so i can’t help you there. I certainly hope you fare well. Good luck to ya.

Make sure you highlight your struggle with depression in your application! A 2400 SAT I is incredible, and you have awesome SAT II and AP scores too. Making USAMO is also very impressive. With all this put together, the GPA discrepancy will definitely be noticed, but if you can write a stellar essay based on your experiences, or get your counselor to mention your issues in his/her recommendation, I really don’t think you’d be flat-out rejected at every single one of your schools. If you did this, I’d actually be surprised if you didn’t get into at least one of the top schools on your list.

to fledgling
the counselors at my school aren’t very good, and they are really unfriendly with students (at least mine is) so i don’t really feel comfortable telling them my personal stories. will that hurt the letter? just an fyi my teacher recs are relatively good and i’m fairly close with them

Well, it would still be ideal for your counselor to highlight the issue (that’s one of the reasons there’s even a counselor recommendation), but if you really don’t feel comfortable then I’d suggest using the ‘Additional Info’ section of your application to elaborate on your difficulties. Or, of course, you could just incorporate your experiences into your personal essays… provided you don’t make them sound like sob stories (i.e. emphasize what you gained from your depression, how that affected your outlook on life, etc.).

The answers on this thread may well be the most misguided on any CC thread I’ve ever seen.

Simply untrue. Your HS GPA is the strongest predictor of college performance and is the most important element in admissions.

Koreans may well be the most overrepresented race at top colleges.

But this is the worst:

Absolutely not. That is perhaps the fastest way to an auto reject. Depression and any kind of mental illness scares colleges. Avoid this subject like the plague.

You don’t tell us where you rank which would be key in assessing your chances. The 2400 also will make you a great transfer candidate if you don’t get the school you want now.

To be honest, I think it’s going to be tough for you with a GPA of under 4.0

Actually, nevermind. With that 2400 SAT score you’ll get in to one of the above for sure. It just depends on how highly these schools value GPA.

what about CMU Tepper and NYU Stern? Chicago?Berkeley? (I’m from CA)
I know that Upenn and MIT are def near impossible

also how would i explain my depression stage then? leave it out?

Right… oops, haha. I have to admit, I read the word ‘depression’ but it didn’t quite register in my mind that this would actually be a huge “turn-off”. I probably responded that way because I’d seen so many posters whose reasons for GPA discrepancies were family issues/sickness/deaths in the family, and in those cases my advice would hold. But yeah, depression is an entirely different thing altogether. :/

so advice on it? >.<

I think that 2400 is going to raise your chances alot. Especially in schools like UC Berkley where they don’t calculate your stats into a score and eliminate. With such big discripencies between sat and gpa scores, i think its fair to say you got a fair shot at most of the colleges lists. But then again perhaps schools like MIT will be a high reach

What about CMU and NYU Stern specifically?
i know that mit and upenn are impossible

BUmpbumpbump

“where they don’t calculate your stats into a score and eliminate.”

what schools calculate and eliminate?? does nyu and carnegie mellon do that?

Bumpbumpbump
