Chances?

Ok, I'm an international student, I just took my first SATs this november, and scored a 2010. CR: 670, MR: 700 and WS: 640. Basically I screwed up my writing section by getting a 6 on my essay. I'm just not used to writing very short 25 minute essays, and the style's quite different from the A-level style I'm taught in my school.

Cornell is a school that I've fallen in love with and I'm gonna try to get in no matter what, but I'd like to ask, should I retake the SATs or will the admissions officers not care too much about the essay? After all, they'll get to read another one on my application. Also, is 2010 considered bad or good? As for SAT II, I'll be taking them this december, most probably.

I come from the best high school in my country which is very competitive, though I must admit I'm far from being the top in my school. However I've been told that my background might be a bonus; I'm European, but I've been living in Asia. How will that help? If at all?

As for extra curricular activities, I've been very involved, though it's hard to compare it to the US system. Over here taking up more than one such activity is very rare, students simply have no time for such things on top of school work.

Admissions really don’t care about the Writing Section of the SAT. Your SAT’s are in the ballpark. Make sure you don’t use “Bongman” in any email address, etc. that you put on application…I don’t think the adcoms would be impressed…

I think you’d need to get your SAT scores up to be competitive, especially if your GPA isn’t too great.

lol i dont get this. he has comparitively better stats than mine yet i was told i’d have a higher chance of getting in. Is it simply harder for international students or what?

cornell doesn’t look at your writing at all
thats their policy so your sat is 1370/1600
which is pretty mediocre but not too bad.
of your international status…
people have different views… some ppl say its harder for internationals
some say its better cus they have to pay all the tuition and colleges want that…
but one of my friend who was an international
got in with 1990/2400 I dunno what his 1600 scale was but
his GPA was a 4.3 which is solid
he took the toefl which gave him a boost. so you should consider taking toefl.
i heard they are more lenient with your critical reading score if you take TOEFL.
you should be looking at 105+ out of 120 if you take it
and hes paying full tuition and attentding cornell right now. (he did ED by the way)
you won’t get rejected simply because of your SAT score.
so you never know… good luck

Retake it or weep…Bongman…

Thanks for the replies/advice so far, I guess I’ll be retaking SATs then, just to be safe at least. Hopefully I’ll do better this time round since I’ll have some preparation. Anyway, bongman is just a random name I came up with just for CC, why so much fuss about it? lol. I’ve never used it anywhere else and I don’t identify with it really.

" Anyway, bongman is just a random name I came up with just for CC, why so much fuss about it? lol. I’ve never used it anywhere else and I don’t identify with it really."… as you become older you will realize that EVERYTHING you do and say says something about yourself…

Does anyone here know what the typical SAT Subject test score/ranges are?

700+ are usually competitive. You’re expected to get more if you take easy ones like Math IIc, though.
SAT Subject Tests won’t make or break your application though. If you get one 770 and one 670, you won’t get rejected just for that.
