Especially since you are a RPI medalist, I’d say highly likely. Recommendations could make a big difference. Your SAT math score is a bit low for RPI medalist but probably still in RPI’s range. Barring a bad recommendation (which is unlikely since you had to be chosen for RPI medal), I’d feel pretty confident. I have heard that mechanical engineering is the most competitive since it is the biggest group of students.

Thanks for the input sandpit. I know my SAT Math is a bit low but hopefully when they see my Calc grades in the high 90s, that will even it out. The Medal Award will probably help some too.
Thank you!

uh, are you kidding? Yeah your SAT is low, but the rest of your application is stacked. RPI has like a 40% admit rate. Its a safety school for you.

Thanks pope. Do you know of any that might make good reach schools?

Lax, I’m an RPI alum and am on the steering commitee for my local alumni chapter, so I get updated by the school regularly on admission stats.

From what I see, I think you have a good chance. I think the medal and strong EC’s will get you in, but I wouldn’t call RPI a safety. The 25 -75th percentile SAT for the class of 2013 was 1270 - 1450 on the math + reading with a mean of about 1360. Yes the admit rate is 40% but the quality is high.

The average for the math, reading and writing was right at 2000.

So all in all I think you are a good candidate but SAT’s a bit low to put RPI as a safety. You may want to add some schools where your SAT is 75% percentile or more.

Good Luck!!!

Agree with Rico. I would not call RPI a safety.

It seems like RPI is one of those schools with a misleading admit rate because only really serious students apply. Good luck rico2 and all.

Thanks to all. Yeah I should have been more clear. I don’t consider RPI a safety for me at all. I thought it would be a bit of a reach for me with my scores but just based on what pope said, I was wondering what he would consider to be a reach school. I’ve seen the stats and I know RPI is far from an “easy in”. Sorry if that all seemed misconstrued.
