chances?

Hey I'm planning on applying to Grinnell (hopefully E.D.)

I've got a 3.56 unweighted G.P.A.
My ACT is low...a 26.. I'll be retaking it and hoping I get better.
I take the full International Baccalaureate program. (hopefully getting my I.B. Diploma at the end of my senior year)

the I.B. classess are the hardest at my school.

A little about the school I attend:
It's Missouri's number one public High School.
It's a college prep. school.
Blue Ribbon, Gold Star School.

I've done three years volunteering as a teaching assistance with the St. Louis Science Center.
I've been Yearbook Editor for 4 years (well after this year it'll be 4)
I've been apart of the Anime club since it was founded (Three years)

I'm from Saint Louis, Missouri.
White Female..

ummm Is ED a good idea or would it hurt my chances? What are my chances of getting in? Anything else I should know about Grinnell?

my total hours of community service will be at least 340 because that is the amount required for graduation from my high school.

Your school requires community service for graduation? That sounds ....strange. I think you will most certainly get in. The remaining factor lies in your essay.
Tons of luck.

I think it is a reach. S got in 2 years ago with a 3.85 but this yar D got in with a 4.13. Afriend of D's was rejected ED with a gpa similar to yours. What are your test scores? Grinnell is getting more competitive every year, this year's accpetance rate is in the thirties. D's friend did an overnight in the fall, showed interest etc.

Sorry just saw the ACT 26, D's friend had a 32, D 31 and 1400. You need to get the GPA and test scores up.

Really? Grinnell's acceptance rate is in the thirties this year? That's not consistent with what I read on US.News. They said the rate was about 60%.

The information in U.S. News and the college guidebooks is usually based on data that is a couple of years old. Per the Grinnell website, the admission rate for the class of 2009 was 37.5%.

http://www.grinnell.edu/admission/classprofile/

yeah i'll be doing an overnight in the fall. I know my test scores need to come up so i've been doing tons of prep...not so sure about that G.P.A coming up much to a 3.8....kinda hard with all I.B classess..i'm going to try..Grinnell really is the only school that has interested me.

alot of the schools require community service for special awards..i've seen a couple of the private schools require like 50 hours of community service for graduation but none have come close to the 340 hours that my school requires of us...it is quite strange but ah well that's life. thanks for your imput!

Honestly, I would say you are out as of now. The quality of your high school is actually perhaps a negative in light of your ACT score. A student from a "worse" school with the same score would be more appealing based on potential.

The good news, as I'm sure you know, is that you can retake the ACT. The closer you get to 30, or above 30, the better chance you have.

The other good news is that it's Grinnell, and Grinnell is very unique. This is true of the students, and this is true of the admissions officers. I know a student here who got a 19 on his ACT. It may hurt their stats, but Grinnell isn't about stats. If there is something about your package that distinguises you, that makes them want you and makes them think you can succeed, they will take you.

If your ACT remains low heading into application time, your teacher recs will be KEY. They are the only other thing (since anyone can write an essay for anyone else) that is truly going to be illuminative of your ability to perform at the level expected.

Go through with the application. Try to focus on what is unique about yourself and try to schedule an interview. I think the ACT is overrated, so I'll be rooting for you. Good luck!
