Chances with a biology major, please?

OH and GPA is 4.0 weighted

I’d say you have a pretty good shot. SAT scores (they only consider M/CR) are great, but doesn’t 670+700=1370 0_0? ACT scores are good, except for science, which might kinda look weird since you want to be a bio major, but it won’t kill you. 4.0 GPA seems good, but what your class rank/percentile? Also while your junior grades are decent, they aren’t stellar so try your best to get A’s first semester senior year so colleges see improvement. EC’s seem average unless you’ve put a lot of commitment/had leadership roles/won competitions in some of those clubs. Is there anyway you could volunteer more every week? Even a few hours, if done every weekday, adds up. I’d say you have a great shot at TCNJ as a non-bio and a very good shot as a bio major. Have you considered applying ED? gl

woops you’re right- math was 660
and ACTs…I didn’t study for them because of the SAT 2s which were a week earlier, so I went into them cold and I had never seen anything like the science section before so I ended up reading everything over and over again which ate up a lot of time and I had to guess on the last 15 with practice over the summer and retake in Sept. I think I can pull that up.

As for class rank- they do deciles, but thanks to my guidance counselor I know my percentage, I’m in the top 12% which is good because my high school is extremely competitive.

Volunteer work- I can definitely try to go more days to the hospital and I foster kittens at my home before they can be adopted so my actual physical presence IN the shelter is about 2 hours - so how should I calculate my volunteer hours I spend fostering?

I don’t know about ED, I would, but I think I have to look at more schools just so I know it’s my number 1 choice.

Thanks for the reply!!

TCNJ isn’t going to care too much about your ECs. Their importance is so over-bloated, even for the tippy top schools which are the only schools that really care about them in the first place (volunteer hours are good, but you’re fine in that regard). I also disagree about your grades, they are fine. TCNJ will use your weighted GPA (IF that is what is supplied on your transcript) so they will only see the 4.0. They also will care about your course rigor, which seems fine (why no APs except Psych?)

A 32 on the ACT is what they’ll consider (better than your SAT), and a 32 is waaaaay above their average and the 75th percentile if you convert from SATs. I’d say you’re safe for the Bio. The average SAT is a 1350. A 32 on the ACT is probably closer to a 1420 or a 1450 on the SAT out of 1600. Its a not a sure-fire bet for Bio, but I feel you have a very decent shot.

Btw, and no offense, how is your school competitive if you’re only in the top 12% with a 4.0? I’m in the top 10% with a 3.77 W/3.5 UW at my HS.

To answer your question about the APs - the only AP class offered prior to junior year is AP US History 1, and since history isn’t such a strong subject, i kinda opted out of it. But other than that, no other APs are available except for when you hit junior year, where you can fill your elective period with an AP rather than something like painting or foods, blahblah.

And about the competitive comment - AP classes count as a 5.0 towards your GPA, honors count as a 4.5, and regular classes count as a 4.0 (for A’s) so it’s possible to have well above a 4.0, so if you look at it that way, it’s very competitive.

Your ACT score is absolutely fine. I got the same composite score and science was also my lowest section and I was still accepted as a bio major your scores and class rank even make you eligible to be invited to apply to the honors program

Your grades are also fine, but I understand what Glacius is saying about them not being “stellar.” You are one of those people that statistically should (and in my opinion most likely will) be accepted but it still isn’t a sure thing. Does that make sense lol? good luck! i really do think you’ll be fine

You have like the exact same SAT score as me and a higher GPA and I got in as a biology major, so I think you would too.

Thanks guys for all your help! Another question-I know TCNJ doesn’t require SAT IIs, but should I send them anyway? Or will they not make a difference at all?

And also, am I allowed to send BOTH my ACTs and SATs? Or just one or the other?

This process is beginning to confuse me, haha

Your SAT II scores are pretty good so sending them might help a little. I think you can send your SAT scores, ACT scores, or both. Also, if you send your SAT scores, I think your SAT II scores will be automatically sent as well.

And yeah, I think you most likely will be accepted, just trying to point out some things that would increase your chances of being accepted to TCNJ, and more selective schools you might be applying to, even further :)

yes you can send both your SAT and ACT scores. i sent both :)
