He loves the feel of Middlebury and will be majoring in science. He loves the science facility and the small classes. We will be visiting this weekend to see the school with the students and he will be sitting in on a science class.

please chance?

He seems very solid to me! Things will be busy because it’s parent weekend. You might ask if you can sit in on any of the panels being presented for the parents. There’s one on the solar decathlon, for example, on Saturday morning. Enjoy!

Wow! Looks great! Did he fill out the recruiting form for sports, because I bet the BB coach would like to meet him!
His scores and grades are fab! Community service is just so-so, but otherwise, he looks great! I’d buy the sweatshirt while I was there!

Thanks. I hope you are right.

He’s not sure he is good enough to play baseball in college. If he gets accepted to Middlebury he might try walking on. One of his high school baseball coaches walked on at Middlebury.
He wasn’t able to go to the Baseball Showcases he was invited to this summer because of his internship.

I agree with you about the community service. Several summers he thought he was going to volunteer and they ended up being paying jobs.

My dream is for my s to walk on BB at Midd-he doesn’t think so , either…I can dream, tho. I think he should fill out ther ecruiting form anyway, unless he doesn’t want to play-you never know, and it can’t possibly hurt.
Have fun this weekend!

S’s college counselor was not concerned about a seeming lack of Community Service on S’s applications to college. As a three sport very committed athlete in HS taking honors and AP classes, he would have been hard pressed to even find the time more often then he did. This “lacking” did not hinder him in acceptances in the least, so I wouldn’t worry too much.

Athletics at Midd are very competitive, however, son managed to find his way and enjoys the “sporty” nature of the place despite his not playing a varsity sport - especially as a science major where labs make the timing of practices and travel very very difficult. Still, he loves the school, plain and simple. His professors, the classes, the facilities, the kids… happy camper. He just declared his major (Molecular Biology, Biochemistry) and I honestly feel that the sciences at Midd are a somewhat hidden gem of a school who gets a lot of press for their languages and environmental programs.

Enjoy the weekend - the weather is supposed to be fabulous!! But it is parents weekend so be aware that things will be much busier than typical fall weekends.

Thanks Modadunn. We are all really looking forward to our visit. I’m very glad to hear that your S loves the science program at Middlebury. I was a little concerned that a small LAC wouldn’t have as many courses and professors as larger schools. It sounds like you are not finding that to be a problem at all. My S will be sitting in on an introductory chemistry class on Monday so he will get to see what the classes are like!

Is your S involved in intramural sports? I know my S really wants to get involved in those. What sports is he involved in? Does he take advantage of the Ski mountain near campus?

Thanks.

Dukealumni - I have PM’d you. But for the general public, I think the science curriculum is really quite broad, but like all sciences and math are often sequential. Most important, I think S has really loved the classroom - discussions, professors, etc. As a department, they also seem to bring a lot of good things to campus - speakers, symposiums etc. I also think that the advising has been excellent, especially for it being early on. Lots of opportunities for students as well… although Son is just beginning to explore these.

My son graduated in May with an MBBC major. Modadunn is right, they have lots of research opportunities. In addition to on campus reaseach, son spend one summer at NIH and another summer split between USC and on campus at Midd. The last one was funded by a Middlebury faculty member’s grant.

Also, son has recently told me that he feels better prepared than most of his fellow PHD candidates at a top ten microbiology grad. program.

Your S was probably in my s chem class-he’s doing well so far.
My boys are both playing intramural soccer-on the same team. Non-athletic brother states he is terrible(never played soccer) but no one cares. He’s thinking of playing quiddich, also runs with a friend some days.
It’s just a great place to have fun and learn lots. Very supportive for all types.

Thanks all for you help.

My S loved his visit to Middlebury on Sunday and Monday. He sat in on an intro chemistry class and got to talk the prof after class. We also met two other science professors just walking around Bicentennial Hall on Sunday afternoon. He also just loves the feel of Middlebury. He seems very happy when he is there.

So he will be applying early decision. Wish him luck. He will need it.

He decided not to visit the baseball coach so he can try to walk on next year if he gets the chance to attend Middlebury.

Best of luck to all.
