Chances?!

Hey guys, just wondering about my chances to BC.

I was thinking about applying EA, but I have read for less competitive applicants should wait till RD??

I have a 3.7 UW GPA with 12 AP/AICE classes and more honors classes.

My SAT is going to be about a 2000 (Taken in Oct.)

My EC’s are average (Travel Soccer captain, NHS officer, Surf club officer, good community service).

Thanks!

While it’s true that EA doesn’t increase your chances of being accepted to BC, if the web site is to be believed applying EA certainly doesn’t hurt your chances either. Look at EA from the school’s perspective. EA is a non-binding agreement, so even if BC accepts you, you are under no obligation to attend. Therefore from a simple business perspective, it’s in BC’s best interest to accept those EA candidates that they would accept regardless of the time/type of application they submit. They will/should accept those candidates that are “slam-dunks”, but that’s not the same as saying they will reject candidates that would otherwise be competitive in the RD pool. Solid candidates will get deferred to the RD round when BC gets to see all the applicant pool and then can decide on your merits when compared to those of all the other applicants.

So, 3.7 UW with 12 APs, a projected 2000 SAT (let’s hope you hit at least that number), some leadership, some sports, “good” community service and I’ll assume “good” recommendations and essays; in short, you’re probably the “average” BC candidate. So unless there’s some sort of skeleton in your closet that you haven’t shared with us, it’s hard to see you getting an outright rejection during the EA phase. Therefore my best guess is that you’ll be deferred EA but probably accepted in the RD.

Outside of the ego bruise of getting deferred during EA, I just don’t see the downside to applying early. That assumes that you’ve already been working on your app and aren’t going to try and cobble something together just to meet a deadline 12 days from now. That would be a big mistake.

With “average” EC’s you will probably need a score somewhat better than a 2000 and really strong essays and recs. Your uw GPA of 3.7 in very rigorous courses is good, but that and a 2000 SAT score alone won’t necessarily get you accepted, even in the RD pool. What is your class rank or approx. decile? Have you taken any SAT II’s?

SAT score came out for me. A 2060.

Might look at Holy Cross-very good school that is SAT optional. HC has nice campus and good blend of academics and athletics with a great alumni network.

SAT optional?? A 2060 isn’t good??

But I agree that HC is a great school and I am applying. Thanks for the thought though!

A 2060 is good, but generally that’s below the threshold for BC and its peer schools.

Write a really good essay. That’ll make the difference.
