Chancing for Yale...

Hey, I'm applying to Yale EA, and it's all I've been thinking about for the last month, so I decided to make a chance thread to see what others think... Peer review has been pretty mixed.

White and 1/8th Native American with some tribal affiliation, Male

Stats
4.2 GPA (Some classes weighted, some not)
SAT: 800 CR, 730 Math, 710 Writing, 800 History, 760 Lit, 710 Chem

EC's

Work:
I've worked at a karate studio since I was 14. Last year I became manager of the local studio, became head of local marketing, and worked with the town and other businesses to create events to showcase local businesses. Also, I designed a curriculum that we went on to sell to a Chinese corporation.

I also work for my Congressman, John Larson. I was on his campaign and now work doing a lot of office work and community outreach (I even included in my app that I personally was "attacked" by Larson's opponent Krayeske).

I used to be in a band that recorded CDs and went on a tour playing with some professional acts.

I currently write for my town newspaper as a columnist.

Sports:
As a martial artist, my team has won the world championship the past two years and been on ESPN (I was on the team the first time). Also I've been doing karate since I was four.

School:
I'm the senior class president, represent all of student council in the school's "Club Council."
I'm in French Honor Society and National Honor Society.

My Recommendations were incredible (I got to read them) and my Common App essay was requested by my high school's English Department as an example for the "College Essay" unit for junior English classes. In other words, I can write.

As a hook, I have been in contact with the Dean of Native American affairs at Yale. His first reply to me was "I was talking about you yesterday." He then went on to say that he would love to meet me in person next time I visited the school. Hopefully that's a good sign?

Finally, I live in CT and my grandfather graduated from Yale Law. Don't know if any of that matters or not.

Anyways, my biggest concern is that GPA. It's not good, and I've got a "C" for Precalc in my transcript... Do my grades kill the rest of my application? I submitted my first quarter grades, which were almost all As, with one B+ in AP Stats.

Thanks in advance!

If they consider fou NA, hard to believe you wouldn’t get in.

You have a verrrry good shot at being accepted.

You are a very strong applicant…

I think you’ll probably get in…

Do my SATs and EC’s draw attention away from my only-decent grades?

Thanks again for rating. If anyone wants me to look at their topic, feel free to ask.

I think you are a very very strong applicant chance me back http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1033113-chance-me-ill-chance-you-back.html

You seem like a great fit for the college. If you don’t get accepted, it won’t be because of the one, lonely, insignificant “C” so don’t worry about that too much. I think you shine with your work, candidate volunteer, and extracurricular experience. The Native American connection definitely helps as well.

As it stands, don’t fret too much on it. You have a better chance at acceptance than a lot of applicants, so relax and good luck :)

Shameless bump

No, but your Native American tribal affiliation does.

There we go.

Hmm. Does the NA mean I can rest way easier?

Who knows? Does one-eight count?

I believe so. Yale also does a follow-up questionnaire for anyone claiming native descent that I filled out. I was invited to do a personal tour at the Native American Cultural Center and meet the Dean. I’m hoping that he’s actually interested.

Very high chance of getting in, IMO
The precalc though might ruin it for you, if it comes down to singling people out

Final bump.

I’m 90% sure you’ll get in. You definitely seem like a fit for Yale - having a C for precalc won’t necessary hurt you too badly because you can’t expect people in humanities to be good at /everything/.

Plus, having a legacy more than doubles your chances. I would now consider your school: how many people has your school sent to Yale in the past 5 years? If it’s a nonzero number, then you have a great chance. Good luck.

iceui2, legacy isn’t as big of a boost as URM is. His Native American ancestry will help me out BIG TIME.

Yes your URM status will be the biggest advantage. But I’d say Yale is still a low reach, as ivies are extremely unpredictable.
